Birmingham on Sea

The Town Hall, Walliscote Grove Road, quite definately - Google maps streetview confirms - thank you. I thought it might be something like that, and vaguely remember seeing a building similar on one of my many visits to Weston, but couldn't be sure.

I wondered about police / court buildings, Ragga - but the present ones are concrete and glass boxes, I hoped the one in my pic was still there. Thanks anyway!

it look like Weston police station & magistrate courts Lloyd
but I could be wrong ......... ragga :)

ragga, here is the Art Deco style courthouse which is also in Walliscote Grove Road. The Police Station is in the multistory building tacked on to it. Down the other end of the street is the superb Art Deco Odeon Cinema.

Although not about Weston, North Devon has a lot of Brummie visitors. We've spent a week staying just outside Ilfracombe and had a great time.
Dunster Castle, Woody Bay (just outside Lynton) Steam Train, Minehead Harbour, Arlington Court (just south of Ilfracombe) and Porlock Weir.

David, there is a little bit of Birmingham on sea just outside Ilfracombe.
One of our brummie members owns a caravan park there,he has not posted since 2005 because of his work commitments but I was down there a couple of years ago and he is still about.

View attachment 50997Did anyone travel to Blackpool on those Standerwick Coaches late 50,s ...Pre motorways it seemed a long journey from Digbeth for a youngster.
Stopping at Knutsford for a cuppa thru Warrington and Wigan......Then great excitement as you spotted the tower as you approached Blackpool

Unfortunately your attachment won't open for me davpen. What did it show please?. I only knew the Standerwick coaches to Blackpool the in 1960's - double deckers called "Gay Hostess", (not a name they would use today:)) They had onboard refreshments served and toilet facilities.

It was the Tower at illumination time......photographed from one of the piers..

Thanks Liz, so the Grand Pier is certainly on track! (kindlyforgive the pun)
Now from Blackpool and mucky pots #747 it's W-S-M and teapots.

Sorry John, your attachment won't open for me!
Of interest to you is in August, Yardley Wood Garage Social are running the first day trip to W-S-M since the 1970's and it's down to see the new Grand Pier. Wonder how many more folks will rediscover Birmingham-on-Sea because of the new pier?
Mike

Brilliant news Dave and belated thanks for your photos Elizabeth.

Seen here is the new seafront - in 1896 that is! I must confess I can't figure out which bit of the seafront it would be today though.

Here are some photos that I took of the pier on the 7th July 2010.
While I was down there an article in the local paper said it would not be open untill August as the builders had not handed it over to the owners on the expected date.
We were staying in Burnham (took daughter down for the T4 concert on the beach at Weston) but went to Weston to have a look round mid-week. Warning - NEVER go to Weston on the Sunday that T4 is on - the traffic is horrendous!!

There was also a lot of work being done on the road by the beach which made it very noisy and dusty - I should think the locals and visitors will be glad when it is all finished.

I love that old photo Mike - I am sure that donkey is still there!:D

Polly :)

Call me a traditionalist if you like but I voted for that design and it hasn't let us down, the outline has just the right affinity to the burnt down design to make it still the Grand Pier for everyone, old and new. Great photos Polly.

This will be me next month - Just arrived at Weston-Super-Mare although sadly it won't be by the train shown on this 1940's card.

Great postcard Mike - is that swimming pool still there?

I like the design of the pier too. By the pier they have a display board on the story of the pier and what is going to be inside. I was pleased to see that one of the cafes decor will be quite Victorian which I think is a lovely tribute to the first pier.
We will definitely go back down when it is open.
Polly :)

Sadly Polly the pool is now derelict and awaiting redevelopment.. If you trawl through earlier postings on this thread you will find more about it. What hasn't changed much over the years is the Grand Atlantic Hotel over from The Pool and seen here after the severe gales in September 1903 that damaged the bathing machines (wheeled huts) on the sands.

Mike - I wouldn't have liked to be in that storm! - great picture though! I must look out for that hotel when we visit again.

Liz - lovely pictures. It is not often you get snow by the sea - I remember a lady who lived by the sea in Wales telling me her children who were about 10 had only seen snow once.

My daughter and her friend really enjoyed the concert - my son has gone down for the last 3 years but he camps with his mates - my daughter won't camp - likes her comforts too much!

Funny thing is, Weston was cloudy all day but in Burnham we had beautiful sunshine all day. The same thing happened on the Wednesday when we went to Weston for a few hours - sun in Burnham cloud in Weston (as you can see from my pictures).

I am guessing from all your lovely pictures that you are local to Weston?
Polly :)

No Polly i am in a group that sends updates of what's happening with the pier,i have watched the progress via the internet
the people on the group post photos of Weston,

I am so glad the promise to rebuild the pier has been made good. Weston holds many memories for me, good times with my late mrs. I know that if she was still here arrangements to visit the new building would be well in advance.
Other seaside towns have seen their peirs burn or slide into to the sea. Big words about rebuilding came to nought but Weston has seen a dream come true.
