Birmingham on Sea

Yes there was a charge, but its not much can't remember exactly, you had to put money in the machine and the barrier would open if the man was on a break
:(oh i love the old pier they should fix it

Hi Dave M,

No charge was mentioned in the BBC program but there is a charge to get on most piers. I am fairly sure that there was a charge (not much) to get on the pier that was desttroyed by fire.

On the subject of piers and Weston the old pier up towards Kewstoke is, in my opinion, an eyesore and should be demolished completely. Perhaps Mossy has an opinion.

Before the fire there was no charge to access the Pier :), the other one Birnbeck Pier :( a lot of history there, such as a one time it was HMS Birnbeck Dave

Oh sorry Dave its been a long time since i visited i had to pay then things change so much don't they

Hi All,

We would all like Birnbeck Pier to be rebuilt. However it has been in its' preent comdition for so long that I doubt if it ever will be. I maimtain that, as it is, it is an eyesore and is not a great advertisement for dear old Weston.

Elizabeth,

Your photo is of the pier in the centre of the front that was destroyed by fire a year or two ago. The pier I am talking about is Birnbeck Pier further along the front towards Kewstoke. It is an eyesore and no one can go on it because it is dangerous.

Hi yes i know:)was just posting the photo to show the progress because i have just received it

:(Well folks i have just been down the front and guess what a big wheel has been erected dont know if its the same one as last year.

And something else i noticed was turnstiles on the entrance to the pier,so it looks like they are going to charge you to go on

How ridiculous is that there will be massive queues i for one will not be going on there very often i dont care how much it will cost im dead against these new people charging when in the past it has been free.

When these new people took over the pier they had security guards patrolling the pier stopping people eating there own food,i was on there last year and a guard went up to a party of disabled children in wheel chairs who all had packed lunches...yes you are right he told them that they could not...i had strong words with this .... to strong to put on here and he just walked away

Mau-reece:(

Too right, Mossy. I've no objection to charges being made for admission - the upkeep has to be paid for and the owners are entitled to a profit on their investment - but to deny people the right to eat their own food, something that many have done for years, is a bit much. Security guards chastising disabled children or their carers for this harmless practice leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Britain seems full of jobsworths these days! :(:(:(

Maurice

The Weston Pier was on the main BBC news this morning I caught the last part.

Hi guys i have to say whenever i have been to Weston there was always a turnstile, sometimes there was a man there and he took the money and just had it open, but if he was on a break you put your money in the machine,it wasn't a lot but its always been like that since the first time i went early 70s,

one of the old Turnstile`s might be in the Museum :), the owners will make a lot of money with the rides on the pier, plus the viewing platform without charging :( for a walk on the pier.

:coolcheesy:So true but they don't think like that do they, just money money:redface:

Elizabeth if you come down to Weston i will meet you on the Pier....is that a date:) Mau-reece

Well done Mossy, were proud of you.:thumbsup:

That's it give them a cap and it goes to their head, pardon the pun Ray,Mossy its been a while since i was in Weston, health problems,

Mau-reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeece

When are you going to use your camera and give us some up todate photos

That's so sad, last time i was at Weston you couldn't get on the pier, but my husband and son went along the rocks and went up from there, but its a shame its been left, hopefully somebody will buy it and restore it to its former glory,oh i just thought one time we were there long after anybody was going on, there were two caravans right down the bottom, you could rent them they were very small

Does anyone recognise the building behind this bus please? The chassis make is Bristol, and the places named on the destination board are in Weston (Woodland Rd, Clevedon Rd, Ashcombe Park) so it is logical to think the photo was taken there - but I can't recognise the building.
A "where is this?" but with a difference!
