Birmingham on Sea

I visited the first week in July and looking at your photos Ray there does seem to have been some progress since then.

There was not that much slabbing down and I don't think those benches were there as they were just finishing the wall where they are.

I think it will be a huge relief to the locals and visitors when it is finished - it is not only messy but VERY noisy!

I am hoping to go back later in the year to see it finished.

Polly :)

I know the motor bikers are descending on the place this weekend so hide your scooter(hair dryer):D:D Mod Mossy. Jean.

The Pierrrots was a song and dance show that originated during Queen Victoria's era as seaside entertainment often on piers throughout the UK and remained popular mainly through to the the 1950's. The entertainers usually wore a kind of clowns outfit as shown by the last remaining Pierrot group called the Pierrotters.

Still no date as to when the pier is opening they are a bit slow down here but hey thats not a bad thing lol

ragga is that a commercial postcard view of the Old Pier? If so, I can't believe they would want to sell views of the poor old pier in that state. What a fine advert for W-S-M that is!

O arr, oi can vouch for that Mossy:beam:
Hi Mossy, the people who post on the group i have been following the progress on,are getting itchy feet,it would seem that maybe people have left jobs thinking they would be working on the pier by now,i suppose you can't rush these things,

We went there some years ago if it is the same one or rather we passed by it on the way to Brean Sands and it was enormous. When Lyn next pops round I will make sure it is the same one. Jean.

Polly im going to have a butchers to day i will take a photo but have problems uploading on this forum,Jean you would not pass Sand Bay to get to Brean Sands unless you have had a tot lol

Mossy,
You should have looked for it before you had a tot...:)
When I pushed the old man there.I took him along the front into the holiday camp, then to the Commadore,up the steep hill, through kewstoke then down to the New Inn for a well deserved pint, continued down Crookes Lane to the front and I'm pretty sure Westholme was down there.
We then went back to the commadore and had an excellent carvery, two for £10.we had six between five of us:)...well worth a visit.:):)

A great weekend had by all. My family met up at Weston for a bikers bash and I think they spent most of Saturday making sand castles. They say life begins at forty?. Jean.

Can anyone remember when you were going on a school trip which used to be Weston or Rhyl that you used to get a piece of card like the size of a book marker and every week you took your shilling and the teacher marked the shilling on your card with the date you paid it in. Our parents couldnt afford to just pay it all off in one go in them days. Although I had long hair in plaits when the school trip was on, the night before my mom used to put my hair in rags and the next morning I had beautiful ringlets. It was hard sleeping in the rags, but it was a learning curve for when I got older and had to sleep in my curlers!! As my mother used to say 'pride has its pinch'.

Carolyn,
When our school U.T.S.Aston went on it's one and only school trip,it was, has you said, saved for over about 18 months, and we all had a little card,to pay our instalments.
It turned out to be quite an event,I have put a description of the trip on post No.438 on page 30 of this thread.:)

Ray you were lucky going by train, we just went by charrabang. All the moms waving us off outside school, some with their hair wrapped in turbans (anyone remember them) and pinnys still on. We all had our name tags on as well. We did try and bring a little present back for our moms though. My first holiday with the family was Rhyl when I was 7, you hear people talking about the seaside but you cant imagine what it looked like until you get there, I was frightened to death to 'fall in the sea' as I had heard that sentence said and I thought you sat on something over the sea and fall off it into the sea.

Carolyn,
We did do some of the journey by charabang, they were waiting for us in Bristol.:)
My first proper view of the sea,was travelling down to Plymouth, along the coast in devon.
I was sharing the carriage with an old sea dog,I was so excited like a little boy,(at the time I was a 17 year old soldier),this old sailor probably thought he was in the company of a complete idiot.

Everyone of my age remembers how the cut moquette upholstery of the coach and railway seats left a red patch on the back of your legs when wearing short trousers or , if a girl, a gymslyp length skirt. Such lovely coaches with names like Burlingham Seagulls, and of course being a child you had so much more leg room . I am a bit of a tight fit these days in any sort of seat .

We used to love to bring a bucket of sand home, but usually stuck on the coach for hours and couldnt always stop, the boys used it to 'p' in it. Did we then throw it out of the window? mmmm cant remember, I am sure my brothers wouldnt do a thing like that, would they??

On the news last night the owners said its on a weekly revue as to when the pier is opening, they also dismissed its costing a million pound a week in lost revenue the contractors have not finished the inside.

Help. Has anyone got any contacts at Weston or Wales or anywhere as long as its not too far away, for me, my daughter and grandson from tomorrow until Saturday in a caravan or mobile home. We have just been let down for us to go to Wales tomorrow. My grandson is heartbroken. Please

Carolina send Mossy a message as he lives in Western. You could always try Bank Farm holiday Park but of course it is not by the sea but in Shropshire. Give it a google there's lot's to do and places to visit like Rays Farm etc and lots to do on the site. Fingers crossed for you from Jean.

Pollypops thanks for your message I dont know how to reply that way. I have telephoned the site but it was an answering machine so I left a msge for them to call me back. Thanks
