Thank you for that site Alf it was very interesting taking me back and making me dream of what used to be for me a very happy time...Cat

These photo's were taken on Friday by what used to be The La Reserve. They were just getting the childrens fair ready for the weekend. Jean.

Dear Jean, on the day I left England I walked across there with the girl in my life, promising eternal love and I'd write every day. I honestly hope she had a happy life, for things seemed to move pretty fast after that. Memories, memories and many thanks. Small world though eh, and do you think it's too late to write now for it was only fifty years ago? Regards, David.

I still exchange e-mails with a girl I knew 40+ years ago - my wife knows all about it!

Where do you live now?

Big Gee

David is this the same girl as the tree
we are going to try and find by echo hill?. My memories are riding Misty from one end of the park to go and watch Pete fishing. Still together. Have other memories also. Jean.

A 1947 Map

Here's a map of the Park, published in 1947 but possibly dating from earlier. Has it changed at all since then?

Chris

Thanks for that Chris. I am going to the library later as they had up to date maps there and if I can get one I will post it to see if there is much difference. Jean.

To all Sutton Park experts....

Gravel Pit question no. 1

Any idea where this is/was, please?

(Oil painting by William J. King - "The Gravel Pit, Four Oaks" dating from the last decade of the 19th c. until perhaps around 1920.)

Chris

Gravel Pit question No. 2.

This one is rather later, between 1941 and 1944 and obviously winter. A unit of the Sutton Coldfield Home Guard on exercise.

(I'm assuming that it was the Park again and it certainly looks like a gravel pit!)

Any ideas please?

Thanks.

Chris

Hello Big Gee, I'm now an Australian and what's more really looking forward to giving you a thrashing with 'The Ashes' . Kindest thoughts to everyone in my old lovely country, but now I also have a second love full of parrots, kangaroos and people held dear. Thanks for taking the time to write Regards, David.David.

I think that was a cut out of sandstone on the left hand side on the road from Blackroot to the Sutton Town Gate. About a third of the way almost opposite the kids paddling area we used to climb on it. Regards, David.

The other side of the bridge [I hope] is where Eric asked me to find. Due to the heavy rain the last three days the stream was rather high and fast and wouldn't risk taking the dog over. We will go back and go to the top of the hill another time. Jean.

hi all
Does anyone have any photos of the great boy scout jamboree in sutton park in the 1950's I think about 1957/58. It was the first since 2nd WW, and can anyone tell me is the fun fair still there.
regards paul stacey

Dave M this is what Dave Weaver who now lives in Australia asked me to take photo's of and there is a lovely story behind it. TTFN. Jean.

Paul the Fun Fair and the railway went long time ago, parts of the railway is still working else where Dave

Followed your instructions David [Weaver] and this is you precious oak tree. Jean.
Jean, if you look very carefully you'll see her face in the trunk. Many thanks for all the trouble I've caused you. Now I can fit another piece into the jigsaw puzzle of my life. Kindest thoughts, David.

Hi Paul: If you type Jamboree 1957 into the Search menu at the top of the page you will see some photos from the Jamboree held in 1957.
Several members on this site visited or were involved in work to set up the site for the 33,000 scouts and rover scouts that attended. I'll have a look and see if I have anymore photos.

Hi Paul: Looks like Wendy put in the link on the forum to the Sutton Park Jamboree thread before I mentioned the thread. Thanks Wendy.

David did you carve into the giant oak too. The other was by the clearing at the side of the road leading to the lake [with the look alike aligater in]?. Jean. ps I did shut my eyes and imagine that little boy whizzing down the hill.

Hi Dave we are off to the park tomorrow and are having a day off from work. Anything you would like me to take a photo of have a complete day to OURSELVES and the dog. Dave does Echo Hill take you up to Blackroot Pool only when we went last week the brook was very high and we didn't want to get too wet as we visited the War Memorial afterwards. Jean.
