Robertson's Golliwog

jennyann

Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P.
This morning my husband, who is a Graphic Designer, sent me the two following web sites. They are about corporate logos that are no longer
being used. One of them is the Robertson's Golliwog. I remember saving up for ages the paper golliwogs that were in the lid of the marmalade and jam jars in the l950's so that I could send away for a Golliwog brooch, which I wore on the underside of the blazer lapel (no jewellery allowed at school) I never thought about the golliwogs being racist at all.

Stephen, who runs the www.sterlingtimes.co.uk site has web pages on the Golliwog and it's history.

I also remember sending away for a Prescold Moneybox Fridge and
also something from Trex but I'll be darned if I remember what it was. Did anyone else send away for such items?

:D I also sent away the 'Paper Gollies' and got and still have a full set of 'Musical Gollies'. They are a little battered now ( broken, or chipped), but for some reason I have resisted the urge to throw them away over the years. May be it was because it was the first full set I ever had of anything new. Before the 'Gollies' everything I owned was odd, or hand me down, I even remember having to wear an odd 'pair' of black 'Pumps' to school for a term once ( It was that, or shoes with 'ols' in the soles).

Jennyann I just put a search of gollies and found your link, it's great thanks for that. I always wanted a gollie when I was young but my mom would not buy one, but now I can I do, I have badges gollies and a couple of books and the little figures, and a framed page for a florance upton book. so thanks again.

Hello micheal you are lucky the fruit ones a rare and are worth some money.

I've just looked in my book and it's the fruit broaches with a gollie in between that are worth a lot. I think your is worth about £25/30.

The website that Jennyanne posted has got all of the gollies badges on it and what year they are from, it's a really good link.

Robertsons Gollies

Elderly waitress aunt in a hotel saved a load of Robertsons golly labels and sent for the Jazz Band and the Footballers for my son. He has still got them dispalyed in his office 40years or so on.
2 years ago, on holiday in Mojacar, Spain spotted the Jazz Band on a shelf in a Spanish Bar but in a rare Ceramic made by Wade I think. I offered to buy the set but they would not sell. The bar has now closed so dont know what happened to them.
Saw the Football team at a Xmas fair in York last year but as plastic mouldings.

When my husband was a small lad there was a fancy dress contest at his school and his mother wrote to Robertson's asking for a Golly costume that he could wear.

They sent her one too, complete with wig. There's an old photograph of him wearing it somewhere but I have no idea where it might be.
His mom showed it to me when we were engaged in 1971.

Not at all Winston. They are super. Thanks for posting them. I always liked Golliwogs and never had one as a child. Years ago when I was with my parents at London Airport about to fly back to Canada after coming home for the first time since being away for two years. My Mother said we had a few minutes before I boarded the plane and she wanted to buy me a present. It was such an awful time saying goodbye which I went through several times over the years of trips back to Britain. We went in the shop and the first thing I set my eyes on was a lovely Golliwog. He went back to Canada with me and I had him for decades until he fell apart. He travelled many many miles. My mothers father belonged to a black face band in Birmingham and basically looked like a Golliwog when dressed in his singing outfit.

Not only has the Golly disappeared, but the Robinsons name is going too.

Maybe Premier Foods to promote Hartleys Jam could make "Hartley Hare" badges to be collected or a J.P.? Hartley, fly fisherman of Yellow Pages advert fame badge, tongue in cheek not in the jam!. Len

The jingle used to be 'Look for the golly.......... the golly on the jar'. God, I can't get the jingle out of my mind now!!!!

I love this photo and description of the Golly history. I wish I had sent away for badges. Thanks Dave.

Dave, what smashing memorabilia. Thank goodness your family had the sense to keep them (or was it you yourself?) I had lots of the badges but I'm afraid they went the way of lots of what we thought at the time was "rubbish".
