What's to be offended about??? I loved my golly badges. I had a Gollywog cuddly-toy too, it was my second favourite to my panda (never had a 'teddy')....NEVER once did I associate it to any human being, in any shape or form; it was my pal! I was an adult, more or less, when it was declared 'offensive' and up to that point I was still wholly unaware of any other possible connotation.....I recall being extremely angry that something so well-loved could ever be regarded as offensive...I still am!

hi johno
we seem to have lost all sense of direction in this country out of all the euopean countrys we seem intent in destroying our culture,heritage, history in some mumbo jumbo dogmatic political hysterically correct knee jerk reaction, which bears no acknowlagement to common sense or regard to the feelings of the greater majority of people who grew up from the 40's or earlier to now, and regarded things like the gollies as part of our childhood, and never associated it with racialisum or disregard to anyone.

I couldn't agree more! One day this country will have to wake up; and preferably sooner rather than later.

Here's a photo of me in 1967 with the golliwog my Mother bought for me at Heathrow Airport on my way back to Toronto
in 1965. I don't have him now. I gave him to my kids to play with and he didn't survive but I do have this photo to remember him by.

Are we not allowed to exclaim "By Golly!" any more, maybe i am old fashioned but i still say it occasionally "By Golly", there i go again. Len.

Jennyann, that is a lovely picture. My son had a gollywog just like that, and it almost didn't survive. The dog attacked it. I had to put a complet patch over his tummy, but my son still has him.

thats a great pic of you jenny...thanks for posting it...

len..i couldnt agree more...its a wonder the song good golly miss molly didnt get banned...

lyn

Len...I say "By Golly" and think nothing of it but I know what you mean...sad isn't it.

Maggs....Glad that your son still has his Golly...all fixed up and very special no doubt.

Hi Lyn: You're right....Good Golly Miss Molly could be banned. Don't think many people think about the word golly.
It's used a lot though as a form of exclamation I would say. I don't see anything wrong with golliwog dolls...love 'em in fact.

hi guys
i went into worc; city today and guess what there was a load of rag made gollys
just like the dezign from robertsons jars
in a basket outside the shop they was charging 4 pounds -ninety five pence each
i know my old dutchess liked them years ago
i was conterplating to buy one but ;
then i thoughy it might offend some-one so did think twice on it and walked away
but what kind of society are we living in -- i asked myself- then i asked you the same question ?.
then this evening i read these threads its sad aint it
seasons greeting to you all best wishes astonian ;;;

hi all
I listened to an interview some months ago on the BBC when a well known Afro/Carribean writer and media demigod spent over an hour explaining why he and his ethnic compatriarts and family had spent their youth and adulthood outraged and offended by the Robertsons golly and the black and white minstral show in particular. Having grown up in Birmingham and had friends and aquaintinces from just about every conceivable ethnic background I never met anyone either in civvy steet or the army who had even mentioned or alluded to being "outraged" by either of these old icons of the British way of life, makes you think don't it.
seasons greetings and I hope 2010 will treat you all kindly. paul

Oh those photos are great i remember when i worked at the coop late 60s they had little paper golly's on the jam jar,i think you collected so many and could get a badge, the children were always taking them even if their mom's weren't buying jam and i never had the heart to say anything even though i was supposed to

If you said "Golly Moses" as i do some times i suppose i could be accused of racism and being against Christianity. Len.

Good morning, Len. I think you'll find that the form "By golly" or more commonly "Oh, golly" are only softened forms of "By God" and "Oh, God", so you could in fact upset a devout follower of Christianity, Judaism or Islam - or any other staunch godly person - because you may be accused of breaking the third of the ten commandments, without even naming Moses. David
