OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Next I have this imposing building but no idea of where it is, some of the notes may suggest it is in Saltey but that is a long shot. Seems to have prams outside the left hand entrance and the figure in the centre seems to have a long gown on. Any offers?

Next we are looking straight down Cambridge Street Tower Blocks on the right, ICC on the left and ahead we have a number of cranes and not much else - The Indoor Arena ( currently known as Utilita Arena) has just started to be built and another step in the changes to the city centre and it national image is starting to be made - from a few car parks to the start of the Broad Street entertainment zone its surprising how quickly ( in reality ) this has taken.

We now look across Broad Street towards the Hyatt Hotel, to the right of the Hyatt not much has changed modern office blocks but to the left the view off in to the distance has disappeared completely, from the left we have the former Bank , now The Exchange and to the right of that is currently empty land which in this picture is the House of Sport , Behind them is where all the changes have been made we have Arena Cenral , Crown Plaze Hotel, Centenary Plaze apartments and completing the view block is The Cube on the waterfront by the Mailbox - quite a transformation - would someone like to pop up to the top of the car park and repeat the photo?

I think those days when they all had their own clothes were better than when they were all forced to wear uniform, no individuality now.
I pity though the one lad wearing specs, I bet he was 'four eyes' to some of the other lads.

I doubt very much their parents' ability to afford uniforms - some of their clothes are hardly of the best quality, and probably hand-me-downs too.
Such hardships can be the driving force to make some kids into prosperous adults.

Wasn't this the one where each floor sloped down to ground level? Also the one where another, to the same design, collapsed in Wolverhampton which condemned this one very soon after?

Okay so we now move onto Roll 12, which I think we will only get a couple of images out of, there are a lot of poor pictures of postcards and I am sure you have seen these postcards before. It gives an idea of the variety and quality of the images we have .

While bricks on corner for blackouts there be a blast wall inside that doorway plus anti collapse steel supports lnside iv converted a couple of these in the past

First off Roll 12 , this is Kings Hall Market, and thats all I have sp I did a quick search of the pages on this forum and came up with the following - "it was on Corporation St. opposite to The Old Square. Finally on this Roll ( said there was a lot of rubbish!) this is The Speedwell, on Stockfield Road - taken in December 1989, another large scale M&B pub which seems to be boarded up on the ground floor although the first floor windows seem to be intact at that time. Has all the various pub signs large name across the front of the building , plenty of M&B and Mitchell and Butler signage as well as the pub sign on the left.

thanks steve...as most of us know the library now sits on the ground of that car park...before that it was the site of winfield brass company..some may recall that before the library was built there was an archaeological dig and i went to visit the site quite a few times to have a look at how the dig was progressing...with permission i came away with some of the old blue bricks

Now this one I have even less information but I assume it is Public works so someone will know where it is!!

Public Lighting Depot nicely carver in stone with leaded windows above and a large gate with curved entrance frame - mirrored either side with the arched door frame and arched window on the other with an ornate window sill.

We now move onto Roll 13 first 6 photos are general shots of Sutton Park , first main shot is described as a new hotel due to open in 1990, As we all know this is the Hyatt Hotel , without the branding and with the work lift and scaffolding around the top part that juts out. Hard to imagine the view down Broad Street without it !!

We have now crossed over Broad Street and come to the sorry sight of Oozells Street School, the picture was taken 2nd February 1990, there are lots of boarded up windows broken windows and missing brickwork , it is amazing to see the transformation to what is there today.
One question the Ikon Gallery - which is what the building became has a tower, this building hasn't, was the original tower removed and rebuilt or was a tower added?

There was a planning application by Brindley Place plc around January 1992. Maybe the tower was covered by that application.

This next image is included more for interest as it is rather washed out - my description says it is the former caretakers house in the grounds of Oozells Street School somewhat overgown missing tiles and windows and which didn't last much longer as far as I can see.

If you go onto Streetview find the Tap and Spile the door has a 10 on it and to the right is the distinctive opening with the round screen. Rather a difference from when this picture was taken, although judging by the state of the building and the telephone number the building had been closed for some time.

moving now to the canal side of Gas Street and a view taken from the old footbridge over the canal. We are looking into what is now the Canalside Bar, showing what this area had become - run down and neglected although still having its original features. Today it is part of the thriving canal side culture and looks well preserved

An atmospheric picture which adds to the location, carrying on with our view around Gas Street Basin again taken from the bridge moving to the left and we have a selection of canalside properties, again taken in 1990, these have now become canalside restuarnts, but the building maintain the character of the area.
