OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Next we have a view of a corner pub , this been the Duke of Cambridge in Great King Street, I am not sure of a year but I like the white brick walls, the chimney stacks and the lamp on the corner and the street names on the walls. Moving down the right hand side is a large bay window and we can just make out the large Lyons Tea advert.

I have what seems to be a copy of this photo, which lists it as 1937, though cannot vouch for accuracy of that date

I have a couple of pictures off the end of Roll 7 , not buildings but may be of interests or actually be someone or somewhere that people know.

First is a Scout, with an old uniform, hat, cord, neckerchief and long shorts and socks. Seems very proud of his uniform and looks very smart

The last picture is rather random but is a group of lads on the corner of Arthur Place with one looking through the gap in the fence on the corner of the two roads. One of those times and locations that would mean something to someone. Summer, long shorts and off out exploring - different times !!

Next we move to Roll 10 - this is another roll with a shortage of images - the first half are photos from a calendar that has had pictures cut out - not very good the first real image is the corner of Adderley Street and Ash road and we have the Adderley Park pub, white brick building pretty original in layout although looking rather run down today but with many feature remaining

The next few picture were taken in Cato Street North and are in or near the Old Mill - first is the demolition of a building a few doors down
Mainly included as it is been knocked down, it is showing what was there - we can just make out the Gasometers in the background, an old JCB and a few walls, take in 1989.

Moving to the Mill proper and now very run down - trees growing out of it and much of the roof missing . seen back in the 1989 when it was still held together, we can see the former delivery tower one column of windows from the left which would have been enclosed and held pulley or lift to move goods between the ground and upper floors. See all the iron framed windows of this massive building - so sad

Next we get voyeuristic, peering through doors and gates to see how the negelect is progressing, although it is out of use it still looks an impressive brick built building . massive windows, delivery rails sticking out of the floors and the walls on the ground floor starting to crumble

20230107165442_05.jpg

Next we have described as an " Old cafe house in Nechells Place" and it does look pretty much as described - looking like the terrace is slowly disappearing from the right - we can make out the remains of fireplaces on the ground and first floors the roof of the cafe is disappearing abd it looks like the door has been shut and everyone has left.

cato st so very different now steve

The last picture from the site and I can only guess that they are stripping the building out and throwing it in a skip, large gates have been installed to provide security , but we have seen how well that worked, Funny to think that over 40 years have passed and the building has just sat there.

I was comparing these to the close up photos I took in the summer (which are posted on another thread). Looks like they literally "locked the gate and left".......

Well thats my New year resolution out of the window - regular posts - keep up to date etc, and a month today it was Christmas - where did the time go!!
I have not been entirely idle, I have gone through a few rolls tidying them up ready to post and found half a roll with a dog on - another totally over exposed and so many duplicates, so as I am trying to run in roll order you may find a roll has only a few pictures due to any number of reasons but rest assured if there is a new usable picture I will post it .

Roll 10b - as you know I am using a typewritten sheet of details to give information to the photographs - location time etc however 10b is not mentioned !!

So I will post the picture and leave the rest to you if I cannot work out where it is.
First is a dark image of a pub on the corner of Islington Row and Tennant Street, I love the awnings to the shops , the shaped eaves to the buildings and the old van . You can just make out the old bus stop too just to the left of the rear of the van

Even I can work this one out - The Sycamore on the corner of Sycamore Road and Park Road, an Atkinsons pub, it has a fine lamp over the door and amazing chimneys and a fine selection of chimney pots. There are a few hangers above ground floor level. Looking down sycamore Road the is a nice swan neck street light and above roof level there is a decorative spire - do we know what for?

This is Farm Street and my best guess at the pub name is Fenton / Benton Arms (?) love the layout, central door large leaded glass window and a door, left side has two door right has one - same on the first floor four windows to the left , three to the right. Roof is interesting pointed gable window but there is an attic window to the left , wonder why.

Last one off this roll and this picture is included for interest as it was on the roll and for the extremely remote possibility that someone on the picture is recognisable. No idea of school, age or era thatthis was taken but it was obviously a class of " characters" with some not happy at having there picture taken, or perhaps standing outside in their sleeves.

Moving to Roll 11, an informative description, "around town in 1989 from the car park rear of Baskerville House. " this covers a number of photos so a use of prior knowledge has been used .

For a picture that is not that old so much has changed, looking to the left end of the Copthorne Hotel we have the old bus stops, which basically dropped people in the centre of all the traffic lanes - there were crossing but not ideal, to the right is the site of the government office block yet to be built which matched the Copthorne in style, and in the distance Nat West tower another "icon" that has gone - we also see the rear of the council house extension and a modern office block.

I think those days when they all had their own clothes were better than when they were all forced to wear uniform, no individuality now.
I pity though the one lad wearing specs, I bet he was 'four eyes' to some of the other lads.

starting off where we left off, on top of a car park rear of Baskerville House, this time we are looking at the canyon between Copthorne Hotel and Baskerville House at the end is a wall of office blocks and the windswept bridge that connects Broad Street with the City Centre, sharp contrast between the two sides of the road - elegant stonework one side and a black glass wall the other , 4 lanes of traffic between the two and someone walking up the side of the underpass!

20230107190231_04.jpg

We now move to the other end of the car park and the view up Cambridge Street and even though this was taken in 1989, the view has changed beyond belief- no more car parks , the gardens and the Library have replaced them the Rep has had a lot of work done to it - it has been re clad and look a lot cleaner and in the distance the ICC is on its way to completion.20230107190231_08.jpg
