Master bakers on the warpath again.
Proposal for a corporation fire brgade.
The court discusses what is "God's will". with a judge who thinks himself (reasonably) as a bit of a wag
I think this exotic thing is some sort of expensive fur stole

They certainly were big on following the Master bakers and Millers storys???

Paul my gt grandfather is Mr Jennings in the articles, so Mike is kindly posting them for me. It is nice to know what he was doing 100 years ago. I hope you and others don't mind.
My brothers are enjoying reading these too!

I would love to see exactly what sort of coat or stole a Kolinsky Victorine was.

I had not picked that up Wendy, it must be very satisfactory to read about an ancester though the media of the times, I too would be very interested if one of mine was mentioned by name, and you could follow a persific story line.

Wendy, I'd never heard of a Kolinsky Victorine so just had to look it up. This american ad for Macy's, albeit 1912, has an Ernine Victorine for sale - a sort of fur wrap. From what I can make out they come in all types of furs - not very pc today. Viv.

Love reading the "news" from the Birmingham Post. Lucky you Wendy :friendly_wink:

My lot were bedstead makers so they proberbly appeared in the newspapers at sometime, I know there was a piece about a Lenoard Bott who drowned in a canal in Birmingham age 16years old.

Please do carry on posting more "news" Mike :adoration:

I was totally amazed on the first one Mike posted so have been following and saving the articles on the Bakers v Millers. I am going to put them all in a folder.

Viv I assume the Kolinsky and Ernine were the makers and Victorine was the style. How fascinating as you say not acceptable today thank goodness. There are some great fake furs today though.

It should be remembered that search engines, when used on newspapers and material that is not in pristine condition often generate false hits, but also often miss true hits because the the printing is not clear (or sometimes obliterated). In addition if the typeface is larger than in the rest of the thing being searched , or in an unusual typeface, then it is likely to be missed. None of the notices on thsi thread mentioning john jennings came up on a search of "john jennings" and "bakers". Thus useful hits may be missed. there is no real solution to this other than going through the whole paper, which is usually not practical except for a very limited period. If see and Bott bedstead makers in my travels I will let Rowan Know (though it will take another 37 years to get to 1900 !)

Got your work cut out then Mike for the next 37 years!! Enjoying these articles. Entertaining, plus we seem to be learning new things from them. One of my ancesters is likely to pop up too, but for less honourable reasons - dodgy dealing in gold! Oh well, take the rough with the smooth, that's what I say. Viv.

Following the earlier suggestion of a corporation fire brigade, a reply - of course, working for one of the insurance company brigades he would not be a touch biased , would he ?
I do have visions of depths of iniquity and old men in dirty raincoats, but the "gentlemen only" probably just meant that the conversation of boring old public school farts would not be of interest to the fairer sex.
I know a striker must be some sort of workman, but do like the idea of advertising for them in the paper.
Drowned in a tun of beer. One might say "what a way to die", but the stuff would have only been partly fermented and in that state would have tasted like the worst failed brew produced by the home beermaker today.
Finally "the future of the Navy" - this little paragraph sounds a bit like something I heard recently - times never change.

Think a striker, or stryker, would have been a blacksmith's assistant. Maybe the railway companies had their own forges.Viv.

These snippets from the newspapers is always interesting - the striker's article was of significance to me as my paternal family were blacksmiths. Many thanks Mike, Sheri

Just to illustrate a 'strikers' workplace here's a 1945 photo of the GWR carriage and wagon works blacksmith's shop, Swindon. Looks like very heavy, dirty work. Viv.

Lozells congregational chapel to open
Master bakers meeting announcement
One of those strange schemmes proposed by the Victorians. Here even th evictorians seem to find it a bit dubious.

I wonder if the William Bennett who made the public apology to the canal company, and the W.Bennett who built the chapel, are one and the same.

Barrie

Edited to add; The Transmission of Letters idea seems like the most hairbrained scheme ever dreamt up.

Report of master Bakers meeting. they seem to be thinking of setting up their own mill.
Edward Jones is listed in the 1862 directory as a pork pie maker, so cake is obviously normally a bit of a sideline. Wonder how many slices in 1cwt of cake.
An ex-employee obviously feeling slighted, perhaps with good reason.
Now anyone introducing a foriegn species might well be fined, but then New Zealanders apid people to do that. I like the inference that the Birmingham Post wasn't too kean on people who shot birds for pleasure, even then.

Wow things are hotting up between the Bakers and Millers. I wonder if the Millers are holding similar meetings. They are both digging their heels in. Thanks again Mike for this and the other fascinating pieces from the press.

Indignation over Beer fraud
Bet the author of this epistle got a bit of a shock

Note the juxtaposition of these two articles. Did Mike do this deliberately?

"We may not be deeply moved at the ladies being clean shaved"

and in the second article

"when her bonnet became a little displaced, and displayed to the astonished gentleman a most luxuritent pair of whiskers"

I must admit the term Burton being salted, sugared and filthy is a bit strong. Great articles again Mike, some odd goings on that wouldn't be out of place today..ha ha.

HI MIKE
Do you know whether or not that was ingleby street ladywood at that period of time in the old news paper reports
best wishes astonian;

Alan
There is only the one ingleby st listed in the 1862 directory, It leading off Icknield St.

Comment on the bakers dispute
Reading room and library for the working classes, with better opening hours than libraries today.
Would have thought the demand for shackles would be going down as slavery was being reduced around the world.
Obviously a vengeful wife on the warpath
Now is it true love , or (more likely) a con on some poor innocent.
