Our beans are setting masses of flowers but not so many beans, some flower stems not setting any at all , why would this be?

I said before one of my hydrangeas flowering well and the other nothing. In this pic the shrub in the background with masses of leaves is the second hydrangea.
We have the same. One much less flowering.

Yes they've pinched my gooseberries and the few strawberries that were coming along nicely .

My husband was told many years ago that the reason the flowers didn't produce beans was because there's a short tongued bee species and they poke through the back of the flower instead and therefore proper pollination can't take place.
I've never researched it but you never know!

Not all bees can access the necessary parts of broad bean flowers as they are quite deep. It is only long-tongued bumble bees which can act as pollinators. Other bees know how to get the goods, however... they bore a hole into the other end of the flower (it's not hard to find these holes on the top at the back) and they literally steal the pollen.
