Gosta Green Through Duddeston

BobS. Sorry I did not mean " Post Codes " What I meant was post numbers
( The post number can be found on the right hand side of each posting.)

hi phil wicked pic. i have been looking for one of the houses in henry st. my gt aunt lived there in 1953 at 7 back o 70. thanks again. lyn

Ernie

Thanks for the confirmation, it was Francis St being on the left that threw me, because that end of the street was the first to go and I don't have much memory of it.

Wales,

According to Kelly's 1950, no 70 was a fish and chip shop that was located close to the junction with Heneage St. which on the photo is located about where the car is parked on the left hand side.

Phil

phil thanks so much for pointing that out to me. so she lived at the back of a chippy. cheers lyn ps should be getting me pic of the vine villa st in the next week or so.

Hi everybody, new to this site.
I was born in Francis Street in 1958, we moved to Kingstanding when I was 6. I don't remember anything good about Francis Street except it was dirty and dim. Nobody had any money and we shared a toilet with everyone else. Life was dismal, the winters were cold and we all seemed to share a bedroom in out 2 up 2 down.
I do remember being rushed to the children's hospital with a cracked head once. My brother Chris was always in trouble and fell through a derelict factory roof, made the Birmingham Mail, he was in and out of hospital with cuts and broken bones. We played a lot on the 'bomb peck' and used to go into the swimming baths, that were empty, and chase the rats!!
I suppose the happier times were when we all played together in the yard. I remember a family called the Chaltons.

Carol. I had left Brum in 1956 and you have described it perfectly, now all these years later there is a certain amount of sadness thinking of the past times. I still like to hear about the area I grew up in.

Phil. Wales. Looking at the photograph, where the car is parked then the white corner building is the " Shepard and Shepardess " Pub, next door was Evans the bookies and then I think the Fish and Chip shop ( fish with the bones in ) I don't have a Kelly's so I cannot be absolutely sure.

hi ger ive just looked in me 56 kellys and the sheperd and sheperdess pub is at 69 heanage st and no 70 henry st is a mrs winifred crathorne fried fish dealer take it this means it was a chip shop. wales.

Wales. I was sure about what I posted but I guess the Kelly's dont lie so I stand corrected.
Thank you for the post as I was also trying to guess where number 70 could have been.
Phil. To the rescue once more.

ger. no your prob right as i think the pub must have been on the corner of heanage and henry streets. lyn

Ernie

The 1950 Kelly's puts the Shepherd & Shepherdess at 69 Heneage St , which puts it on the corner junction of Heneage St & Henry St.

Mrs W. Crathorne's fried fish shop was at No 70 Henry St which was close to the same junction. There may have been a bookies in between the pub and the fried fish shop, but don't forget in 1950 it wouldn't be listed in Kelly's.

Phil

Phil. Lyn. I see the points you are making, I overlooked Heneage Street
when reading the posts. Was there nothing listed as next to the fish shop ?

Ernie

A photo of an Ansells pub was posted on the site in December 2007 it was on the corner of Henry and Heneage Street but it had no Pub name mentioned... so is this the Shepherd and Shepherdess. Sorry folks I put the info in my files but I can't seem to find it on the Forum now.
Thanks for the photos.... I'm following all your notes.... Where was the Gas Works? Georgie

hi georgie. be great if you could find th pub pic we await with baited breath. ger im just checking me 56 kellys again. back in a tic lyn

Hi Georgie. Nice to hear from you again. It was the " Shepherd and Shepherdess" pub at the corner of Henry Street and Heneage Street.
The Gas Works I would consider was from the bottom of Windsor Street and also Avenue Road. Although quite close together they would be referred to as Windsor Street Gas Works and Avenue Road Gas Works.

hi folks. the 56 kellys reads west side num 140 a franklin and son builders merchants. here is gt lister st. here is coleman st here is heanage st. num 70 mrs winifred crathorne fried fish dealer num 60 e potterton and son brewers engnrs. here is francis st. then it goes to num 38 and 34. i would like to see one of those maps that shows the indivdual houses and buildings will try and find one. lyn

Georgie

Have you got things straight, around that time Ernie was asking for a picture of the outdoor on the opposite corner of Henry St / Heneage St. I posted one for him. I don't remember any photo of the Shepherd & Shepherdess other than the one Ernie posted of one tiny section of it, and that I later posted a better copy of the same photo for Ernie.

Phil

back again. 56 kellys shows that the shephead and shepherdess was defiinatley on the corner of heanage and henry st. it reads shep and shep public house 69 heanage st. here is henry st.

Wales

Here is an enlarged section of the plan that Ernie posted earlier in this thread. Though as it is dated 1888 it might be a little early, but the buildings should be the same.

thanks for that ger. so can i take it that we cant see num 70 where my gt aunt lived. its good though to see the houses on the other side of henry street. thank you lyn

Lyn. You are right to think that you cannot see number 70.
One consolation is that the rest of the street had not changed in those early years.
Phil. I must apologize to you. Page 32 post 317 is a map that shows Aston Street going past Gosta Green, so if that the case where was Aston Road and also number 9 ?

Hi Ernie... I've forwarded the photo in an e-mail as I can't find it on this site at the moment. Georgie

hi georgie is it a pic of the shep and shep pub you have got. love to see it if poss. lyn

Georgie. I received your email, Thank You for the Photograph.
Lyn. Its a photograph of the " Outdoor " on the opposite corner.

I have been putting the Photographs onto CD but have not quite finished them.

Re No 9 Aston Rd, as far as I can see it was located where I have placed the x on this map. At the corner of Holte Rd and Aston Rd.

According to Kelly's 1913 No 9 was Mrs Selina Lilley Wardrobe Dealer

Phil

Phil. Thank you for your post, I shall post two maps tomorrow one contradicting another as to where Aston Street is.

Ernie

What I think is causing the confusion is, later maps show Aston St starting at Lancaster Place, where Central Fire Station is now and changing to Aston Rd at Gosta Green.

Earlier maps show Aston St starting from the same place, and continuing past Gosta Green and not changing to Aston Rd until reaching the junction by Bagot St.

What I think you need to do is find the dates that your ancestors lived at No 9 and work out if it was Aston Rd or Aston St at that time.

Phil
