Hi Phil, Two more great photographs from you.
I cannot remember the Stag and Pheasant, I can only guess that it must have been opposite Woodcock Street swimming baths but I cannot remember
it I am so sorry to say. I hope that maybe you or someone can put me right, I guess it may need a call on Kelly's once more.

Phil, Cannot help thinking of Will Hay when I think of that Fire Station. I seem to remember the other part of the building just around the corner and looking through the windows at the fire engine parked inside.

Ernie

I don't think either of us are old enough to remember the Stag & Pheasant which I can only assume was opposite the baths. That corner has always been the Co-op depot during my memory and all of the times that I used the baths.

Hi Folks,
I havent read all of the posts on this thread yet as it is a BIG one but my father, Arthur, and my grandparents, Arthur and Selina, lived Back of 33 Gt Lister Street in 1906, the year he was born, onwards and they certainly fit the thread title as the street ran between the 2 points. Would any of you have any information on the area from that time on until about 1930, i.e. connections, references, etc, etc?

The Stag & Pheasant is in the 1921 Kelly's, but has disappeared by 1940. On the 1890 map it is shown as PH (marked in blue), and ,as you say, was almost opposite the baths

Thanks for the Piccy of Willis Street .. We lived at number 72 opposite toni and Gus Taronis. He had 2 yards .. one was a scrap yard and the other was breakdown vehicle parts . Does anyone remember the shopkeeper in Willis street Mrs rose she had a huge Black Chow dog ? My mum told me that I went to St mathews school from 5 till 7 year old .. but I dont remember . This was in early 60s.
My Nan was a Bargee .. born Saltley Docks in the 1880s her name was Sarah Smith ..married Payton and later Rhodes and she lived in Willis street .You went through a back passage into a courtyard and ours was the only house with a little garden .

Dave, all I can say is read right through this thread... There are pic's and information that cover just about all of Gt Lister St and it's surrounding streets.
There are other threads that will be of interest to you too, just put the word 'Nechells' in the search box at the top of the page and you will be happily surprised what you will find.
It really is worth taking the time to do that and it also save people having to repeat posts that they have already submitted on the area on this or other threads.

NB: It also makes the job as 'Moderator' easier too. Because as much as I loved the area and it's history (I spent 10 years of my childhood there). Reading all the posts as I do, it can become a hassle when reading the same information over and over again.

Cheers Pom

Qoute ...I think those shops could never have kept going without people having things on the slate and the pawnshop was always busy in those days. We lived from hand to mouth even in the early 1960's , take the little book in and get your goods put in " on the strap " and payed at the end of the week. Sounds terrible now.

MY dad worked for the Morris Commercial and then got made redundent , he had 5 kids and it was very tough . We were always sent to the corner shop to have things on tick , always hiding when the rentman came or the insurance man or the clubman . It must have been very hard for mum and dad in those days . We mainly ate bread and jam or bread and dripping . Altho mum did manage to make us sunday dinner with breast of lamb or liver and onions or Hock ... hmhm makes my mouth drool . Oh I live up in Yorkshire now and their chippies have never heard of roa and chips .. pity .. !

Phil, I meant to say. it is great to see those photographs of places that were before our time. A lovely look into the past.

hi all. wondered if any one may have any more pics of henry street. ive found a couple but any more would be great as it now seems likely that this street holds some family history also pics of any pubs that may have been in henry st would be great. many thank to all wales.

hi derek. im fine thanks. been very busy lately with family events. just getting back to normal now. thanks for the link will give it a go. lyn

Melvina Road Photo. It looks like it was taken from South Tower on Duddeston Manor Road.I have included here a pic I took myself when I lived in Home Tower going the other way up Little Hall Road for comparison.BobS

Pomgolian.I have looked at my pic of Kellett Road and it looks like it begins with a W but some of the letters are missing.Could it be Wyckham House?BobS.I have lightened it up a bit and put it here.

Some great photo's in here, a lot of the street's have turned up in my family Ancestry, so it's good to see what life would have been like when they lived there, the Heneage street one's are particularly good, my Gt Gt Aunt died there in 1905 and her husband in 1935... will be great to add pictures to my notes.... just out of interest in 1920 my Gt Grandfathers dispersal papers say his address is Gordon _______ , _______parade it looks like, anyone have any idea what road it could be?? Thanks Claire

I have been looking through the photo's that I have, I have found these odd one or two that may be of interest to viewers of this thread. There is one of Long Acre Nr Railway Terrace , one of Great Francis St Co-op, and one of Gem Street School.

I hope they are of interest to someone, as I think there are more.

as usual lovely pics phil. if you come accross henry st on yer travels i would love to see them. wales

Ernie

This photo gets you a little closer to No 9 Aston Rd. It would have been opposite the houses next to the Swan with Two Necks on this photo.

If you go to post 339 on this thread, you will find a street plan of Henry St dated 1888 posted by Ernie (GER22VAN). It marked Duddeston but it shows the full length of Henry St and all the houses.

Back near the start of this thread on post 18 you posted two photo's that you believed to be of locations in Heneage St. I have today taken delivery of a book containing both photo's. The book say they were both taken in Heneage street in 1961.

There is also a slightly better copy of the photo of the Henry St Heneage Street junction you might like to see dated 1945, and there is a photo of Loxton St School dated 1964 which must have been just before it was demolished. I don't remember this being posted before.

Phil. Your post 434, Am I thinking correctly that this is a view down Aston Road from Gosta Green ? The Photo of Heneage Street is great and the Loxton Street school one is of the Junior school.
I shall have to look up any new books that are out if I can get to Birmingham in the next few weeks.

Ernie,

Re post 434, the photo shows The Swan With Two Necks which was replaced by Central Fire Station. To the right would be the junction of Vauxhall St which you can just see on the photo.

The area was then known as Lancaster Place and the photo is looking straight down Aston St towards Gosta Green. Unfortunately No 9 the address you are looking for is on the side of the road we cant see.

Phil

A picture of workers at Nechells Gas Works during WW1. Now that is what you call sexual equality. I know some blokes that would baulk at the size of those barrows even if it is only coke.

Hi Phil, I can follow you every step of the way to Gosta Green, but no 9 Aston Road would be past Gosta Green heading along Aston Road towards Love Lane.

Ernie,

I think we are getting our lines crossed somewhere, are you looking for an address in Aston Road or Aston Street, because I thought it was Aston Street you were looking for. Sorry mate, I'll keep on looking.

Phil
