Gosta Green Through Duddeston

Ernie

Have you never considered purchasing any Kelly's directory's on CD. It would save on those trips to the library. Have a look at this site, its one of the cheapest sites I have found with most years selling for £11.99 including postage.

I have had several from there, and I have another one on order at the moment. I have never had a problem with supply or delivery and the disc's are 100%. Give it a try.

Phil, hope you don't mind I made a copy of your post and look it up when I get to Birmingham. Not been able to manage so far this year. This is in answer to your post 553

Mike and Ernie

A slight bloomer, the correct title of the book is Developing Birmingham 1889 to 1989.

Everything else is correct, sorry about that. I do have to add that copies are now changing hands at around £35.00. each. So my advice is try the library.

Phil

Phil. CD now on order, Thank You for your help.

Also have made a note of your last post.

Ernie,

Glad to hear it, you'll soon recoup the money for the CD in saved electricity, not having to charge the trike for those trips to the library. Anyway its no fun in the winter.

I'm after information again, can anybody tell me the name of the pub in this picture. The picture was taken on Coronation day in 1953 in Oliver St, Nechells.

I think its the junction of Oliver St and Cromwell St and the pub is the White Heart. Can anybody with a better knowledge of north of Great Lister St confirm this for me.

Phil

hello pmc 1947,
Definately the White Hart, I think the shop on the other corner was W. Perks, and you can just see the top of the gasometer above the shop, which would have been down Avenue road.

Not sure if its been on before.

I don't think we have ever seen this one of Gosta Green before either. We have seen many shots of Gosta Green and its many stages of development through the years, but I don't think we have seen the old free library and drinking fountain together and up close before.

I thought this might interest you. Its the barracks at Great Brook St. Nechells taken c1920, sorry its not a very good photograph, but I have not seen many photo's of this building about. The caption says that the spire you can see peeking over the top of the building is St James's, so it must have been taken from somewhere around Windsor St.

Phil.

Phil. Have not seen that one, I think a Photograph in any condition is well worth posting.
I agree that it must have been taken from Windsor Street.

Hi everyone, if you go to search and click on advanced search at the top of the page. Then put Silks in the subject box and Pomgolian in the user name box.
You will find all my posts about Silks Cafe and Bookies since around 1957.
My brother was a great friend of the family, he was treated like the son George Silk never had, because they only had two girls.
Pauline who was a Tomboy and a couple of years older than my brother and went to school in the area and was well known around Nechells.
And Gillian who was a lot younger than her sister and grew up in the house they own in Castle Bromwich.
I know my brother was still in touch with Pauline Silk up until a couple of years ago, in fact he may still be. She was living in Leicester the last I heard and would be around 72 years old now.

This photo, says it was taken in Aston Rd in 1934 looking to-wards Gosta Green. I think that the crossroads ahead is Love Lane, Digby Street and if that is so, then the white faced building behind the tram has all the chances of being No 9 Aston Rd. What do you think?

Looking at this photo. The Tram is moreorless level with The Fountain (on the right).
So... The Fountain.. with The Library next door... my families house and shop.. 265 next to Library.. they also had 264 Aston Road.

The other side of the Fountain was Legge Street. The rear of 265 and 264 Aston Road came out in Legge Street... and I have family photos of this... Digby Street crossed through the other end of Legge Street.

From this angle... you would hae Duke Street and Aston Street in the background.

Georgie

Georgie,

You are right of course, it is much further up Aston Rd than I thought, mind you I did say I only thought it to be the location Ernie was looking for. I don't know how I missed the Library and fountain on the right I only posted a photo of it the other day.

So it looks like this photo was taken, from near enough the location of the elusive No 9 that Ernie is looking for.

Ah well back to the search.

Phil

Phil. Thanks once again for your trouble, I thought the same as you that the photograph must have been taken from outside Number 9 Aston Road or very, very close by.

Looking for 265 Aston Road ( which street or road is it close to ? )
Will keep trying, its good practice for me. Date 1904.

Astonite. I am sorry to say it is from a photocopy. I hope that someone can come up with the original photograph or improve on it somehow for you.
They keep a photographic collect at the Central Library on the 6th floor but it is not cheap to have a copy, that's if they have it there. I hope that someone will be able to help.

Hi Astonite,

Here's the same photo, I have others that were taken from more or less the same spot at earlier dates if you would like to see them.

Phil

05/01.12. I'm afraid unless Ernie reposts his photo I haven't a clue what this was

265 Aston Road

I'm looking back through lots of information I have on Aston Road.

Looking at the 1910 photo of Gosta Green Library... to the right there is a lamp post... then a triangular flag on a pole.. 265 has the blind pulled out.. but as I said my family had 264 next door too... you can see the display boarding over the doorways ... I have a photo from across the road of the building. Re Kellys 1904 ..Nathaniel Budd (265) was my 3x great grandfather...who started the tent and marquee hire business... the business moved to Richard Street when the street was demolished for Aston Uni. 265 is now under the Students Union.

Behind the left of the fountain is Legge Street.

Ernie: I'm not sure if I have told you this before but... I have been in contact with someone whose mother lived at 242 Aston Road which was facing the General Wolfe pub. Then they moved across the road to No 13 (which sounds far away but it was just across the road) I will try and get in touch with this person again to ask about No 9.

Georgie

you can make out more detail from this photograph you can make out the name of the shop

Georgie. I have just bought the 1904 Kelly's CD and thought I would post the bit that I found not realising that they were part of your family tree.
Was there the name of Averill that you wish me to check on, just say the word and I shall have a go.
John. A superb photograph.
