St Gabriel's Italian Church Deritend

It has ben discussed before, but I don't have a reference. The discussion did not produce much, as i remember

Thank you, Mike.
Here are the Bordesley St listed buildings from BCC consolidated list, but unfortunateley there is very little information on 1 Bordesley St. Perhaps however it will jog memories from BHF members vast store of knowledge.

Hello, I am looking for an old picture of St Gabriel's Church which was situated on Pickford Street/Barn Street, Birmingham.
If anyone knows where I can locate such a picture I would be most grateful please.
Thank you.

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone has come across an old Photo of this church please ? I know it was hit by a bomb in the war and ended up beng demolished. My nan and her sister had a jhoint wedding in this church in 1915 :)
Many Thanks Jean

Jean: There is a photo of the church and area taken from the air at Page 5 Post #75 at the above link on berniew's post here.

Now I know
HIGH STREET
1.
5104
Deritend B12
Former Church,
(part of premises occupied
by Dolphin Showers)
SP 08 NE 7/53
II
2.
Circa 1898-1900. Small brick built church but with considerable height to walls,
in a basilican-Lombardic style with good Arts and. Crafts brickwork. The principal
feature is the companile tower to the north-west corner, triple arcaded openings to
the upper stages defined by moulded and cut brick cornices; pyramidal pantile roof.
Similar roof cladding to main building with deeply moulded eaves cornice. Four
round arched lancets light the side elevation.

Listing NGR: SP0809986328

The former St Edmunds' Boy's Home was designed by Mansell & Mansell. Two simple brick bays of 1912 fronting Deritend, then a bedroom extension with a wooden casement window, and a five-bay block of 1913 - 14 with hipped roof. Set back, the chapel of 1913 in Early Christian style, above a ground-floor workshop. Not quite as impressive as Dixon's or Ball's work (e.g. St Basil) but with an impressive campanile, closely based on that of S Giorgio in Velabro in Rome. The interior has an inserted floor, but retains a rich painte timber roof with king-post trusses on big consoles.

If you get a bus up and down Digbeth High Street every day (e.g. Stratford Road, Warwick Road or Coventry Road routes) you'd see it a lot!

First took photos of it in 2009

Hello I notice the last posting was early 2015 it is now over3 years later so can anyone confirm if any of this area is still standing as I will be in tipton next month doing some more family reserch & as yet I have not been able to find a full photo of st gabriels church before it was bombed I hope to be able to find some remains of where an ancestor lived in barn st it was her address that most of my canal boatmen used to marry & baptise their children

Jeanette

There is nothing of St Gabriels left in Barn Street except factory units. I don't think the church ever had a burial ground as there wasn't enough room for one by the look of it, but you would need someone with more knowledge of the church than I to be sure.

On Ancestry there are baptism and marriage registers but no burial register so presumably, as Phil says, it did not have a burial ground.

jan i read some info somewhere ages back and if memory serves me right you are correct.no burial ground

I have notes from an earlier request as to St Gabriels. the conclusion was hte same as yours that there was never a burial ground attached o the church. There was once a small separate burial ground in Liverpool st, but the last burial was in 1834 and in the late 19th century it was sold and built over

Hi,

I can only post a few images from the inside of the building from 2015. The building suffered again from a fire next door, the sheesha lounge in 2013. I saved some charred wood pieces after the fire that I am currently incorporating into a contemporary sculptural art piece.
The building had a series of unfortunate events (from what I can tell, research, archives and forums...). Walking up the tower was yet another experience. You feel pain, fear and sadness. IMG_4313.JPGIMG_4316.JPGIMG_4324.JPGIMG_4331.JPGIMG_4335.JPGIMG_4342.JPGIMG_4359.JPG

Thank you for sharing these images, I’ve been researching my family history and my great great grandmother married in St Gabriels. I had hoped to visit as I’m in Birmingham for a business event in February (2022). Such a shame to see history being damaged so basdly.

My Grandfather Richard Baker married Beatrice Marshall there 12th September 1904.View attachment 150088
Hi
My Grandparents got married at Saint Gabriels in 1901, and they were both of the parish. Does anybody know which area this would be covered by on the 1901 census please?

Best wishes
Alison

Thanks so much. I am having difficulty finding them on the 1901 census. George Wilkins a Horsedealer. Albert Harry Wilkins a tubedrawer, Lucy or William Palmer. I know you said
Sometimes a little fib is told so you can be married in that parish. Could that apply to both bride and groom?

I find it odd it doesn't give an address but just says "in the parish".
If they liked a particular church sometimes a friend's address was used if within that parish.
They could be anywhere on the census.

No reason they both couldn't be lying.

I can't see Albert or George. Would George be dead by then perhaps and his wife (Matilda ?) ? In which case a young man with no parents could be moving about quite a bit and be easily missed off a census.

Are you looking for Lucy as well? She seems to be in Northfield with her mother, father has died.

Reactions: AMW
I thought Lucy may be in Northfield but wedding certificate doesn't say her father is deceased.
Thanks for mentioning Matilda as I thought that may be Albert's mother but wasn't sure either. I think he may have two brothers Frank and William Wilkins. Is that where you found Matilda on 1881 census? All very confusing.
