OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Here we have High Street Sutton Coldfield in 1977, Town Hall and registry office in the background . Mini Clubman in the side road and a few BCE ( Birmingham City Engineers ) barriers to keep the site safe. Lady on the left looks purposeful wrapped up for the weather armed with her shopping bag.

I am guessing here as I don't know the area but suspect that the building shown below occupies the plot of land. I have taken the view slightly to one side so the Town Hall can be seen looking up the side street (King Edward Square).

Sue mentioned heart strings - think this pulls at them on many levels, the derelict church, Great Russell Street, I am sure someone will know the back history.
The two children - brother and sister? one with a football and one with a tricycle, its also winter - no leaves on the trees so we assume its quite cold but no coats on.
The general street scene with lamp, sign and the brick paving. ( sighs wistfully)

Photo taken from Tower Street?

Now I really enjoy this picture - there is so much going on from the Busses, to the gathering of telephone boxes and the shops running down from the right, love the British Rail lorry turning in front of the Corporation bus. If you look carefully there is a person climbing up the shuttering on the building site, and it looks like it is only a picket fence that keeps the public out !

smashing photo steve no health and safety back then...well remember woolworths does anyone know if the building is still standing...i dont go into the city centre unless i have to

Something a bit different but probably remember by many , this is the Bull Ring bus station, Midland Red busses used it . Love the chalk board reminder that the speed limit is 5 mph.
Its amazing the number of lanes and stops there are , used to amaze me going from the market hall to see all the busses and no visible means of how they go in and out!

Well we all know Baskerville House in the middle and the Hall of memory, but no repertory Theatre yet, there is the odd building that is still there today but plenty that have gone. There are many building still to be constructed, no blocks of flats, or Alpha Tower. Test196 1.jpg

Here is another site that has a lot missing, Holloway Circus, no Block of flats in the foreground and the buildings in Suffolk Street have not been built yet. The Rotunda is just finished, and you can see the cooling towers in the distance. Love the wooden huts on the building site much better than Portacabins. Test182 1.jpg

Finally the road sign on the wall says Ashted but which one I don't know, a few boarded up properties but the window cleaners are at the end of the street so still a bit of life. Quite imposing three storey houses, love the doorway and how there is a false window above the door. Interesting that there are two lamps together at the bottom of the road but nothing further up and a fine selection of chimney pots as you go down the road.

I dont think you would recognise it Lyn, only landmark is St Martins Church and Nelsons statue.

great shot steve...as most will know the car park to the right of baskerville house is now the site of the library and before they started building it an
archaeology excavation was made uncovering the foundations of the winfield brass company...for quite a few weeks i made quite a nuisance of myself :D

steve re the ashted photo..it is ashted row dated 1964...i have the same photo

lyn
Good to have an exact date, Lyn! Thank you. The white house at the end of Ashted Row was no. 101: the surgery, operating theatre and private home of Dr. Tighe. I believe this area is now a playing field for one of the local schools; St. Vincent's, possibly.

thanks alf..i could not remember the name of that well known doctor...so sad to see our history going

lyn

another set of geat photos steve...aside from the historical content i always zoom into the faces of people just in case i spot someone i know or even myself....cheers

That’s a very new Silver Shadow, about ten Ford Escorts’ worth. There must be money in office furniture, or is there a bookie’s near by?
Interesting, the mini and is it a Capri are P registered, the estate is M registered, none of them local registrations, were they the printing companies or just pure chance. M - 1973, N - 1974 & P - 1975
