The Good Companions : Coventry Road, South Yardley

For those who patronised "The Goodies" I have uploaded a page for this inter-war pub. Lots of photographs with many of the rooms featured, along with the bowling green. I have provided details of the architect and sculptor etc. Plus, a mention of the day when the leader of the opposition did a...

Architectural Guide to Birmingham and the Black Country

At long last, the follow-up to the 2005 tome is due out on March 22nd. Poor Andy, he has had to keep updating the text as bulldozers removed buildings he had discussed. On several occasions I had to e-mail him to let him know that a building had vanished. Er, you may find me in the credits as I...

    Surname Search

I am trying to compile a list of people included on my site to make it easier for browsers to find ancestors. I only include a name in this directory if I have typed something about the individual or have included a newspaper article. There are, of course, thousands of more names buried in the...

    18th Century Publicans

I was looking through a copy of Sketchley's trade directory published in 1767 [the earliest record of trades etc. in a directory] for Deritend. And then I thought I could type up a list that would be useful for others. I don't think this is available elsewhere as a listing. I have only got up to...

    Union Inn - Berners Street

I have picked this one out to help clear up some people's misunderstanding of the term beer house. Reading between the lines of some posts, some think that they were of low status, a rough hole with little repute. But here is a good example of a beer house that was well constructed, occupied a...

    Minor Theatre - Allison Street

I have squeezed a poster into a page at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/allison-street/ is there a theatre buff on the forum who knows about this place? The poster is 184 years-old which is nice.

    Colorado School

I get some bizarre messages sometimes but I have been asked if there was a school known as Colorado in the 19th century. Anybody heard of such a thing. Sounds a little unlikely to me but I thought I would ask...

    Milk Street Pubs

During my research on the Big Bull's Head I got diverted up into this street as it caused a movement of the pub! If you like maps then you'll love the one I have prepared on this page. It illustrates the extension to Milk Street to good effect. Cheers Kieron The link is ...

    Digbeth Pubs

I have had a wander around the site and couldn't find a specific page for Digbeth pubs so have started a new thread. I am talking about the street not what has become known as the area of Digbeth. Sue, longest-serving licensee of the Big Bull's Head, asked me to look into her pub and I am about...

    Burbury Arms - Burbury Street

Has anyone ever seen a photograph of the Burbury Arms? The pub was on a prominent corner position so I would imagine that somebody took a snap of it at some point. I have uploaded some info and pics of Burbury Street at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/burbury-street/ but, as you...

The Bell Inn - Lozells Road

The Bell Inn on Lozells Road may have gone but the building survives. And after looking into the history of the pub I'm wondering if somebody should apply to have a blue plaque mounted on the front wall. I'm fairly sure nobody has dug up this information previously but here is a pub that was run...

    Off Licence in Percy Road

Last week I was sent a lovely photograph of an off licence in Percy Road. The building still stands and is now a general store and greengrocery. Anyway, this led me to do a little work on the thoroughfare so if you are interested in this part of Greet and Sparkhill have a look at...

    Lozells Inn - Lozells Road

I have done a little history on this pub at: https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/lozells-road/lozells-inn.htm - I haven't done a great deal of research so it's only a potted history, however, I wondered if anybody remembers any of the people listed as publicans? I have a complete list...
