City centre buildings could have survived with sensible planning of of the inner ring road and provision of well signed secure, adequate, affordable, efficient Park and Ride facilities outside the city centre. There could have been central traditional frontages retained with modernised building work behind them as in John Bright Street that could have included underground delivery areas served by lorries only allowed in on a time controlled basis through pedestrian areas. Limited permit parking in the city centre would have encouraged use of the park and ride facilities. Bath and Oxford amongst others have managed to do this and therefore retain their Heritage buildings. Birmingham could have done the same but as we know decided in the 60's that it wasn't the way forward as Brum was about business and indusry not tourism, and never mind what the residents thought of the modernisation programmes. Too late to change now, sadly what's gone is gone.

This is on Constitution Hill, the "Hen and Chickens".

Funnily enough I walked round that area a few weeks ago (passing that pub) taking photogtaphs of a number of buildings and I posted the walk on web
site called Skyscraper city (with about 30 photographs).

The walk was called "A (slightly) sad walk round inner city Birmingham"

I wonder if Ragga posted his original picture (post 149) in the wrong topic.

I notice Ragga has also posted some "where is this" entries in the "Old and New Brum Pictures" topic so maybe he meant to post it there.

I must admit I did post a reply to his picture, but until I saw your append above I had no idea it was in the "Buses" section.

I usually select "Forums" and look at recent updates in the area on the right which lists updates by date and not by topic.

I personally never go in the city centre now, unless its essential, for I can remember how it was before it was desecrated in the 1960's and even earlier, and I find it all very sad looking at particular sights and remembering what used to be there, thank God for old photographs. ESPECIALLY THE BULL RING. Eric

I've had a go seeing if I could make out the street name it appears to be 5 digits possilby A first then the word passage.

Do'es that help.

I think its Allison Street, and the photographer is standing on the corner of Coventry St outside the café. The passage over the road is Shaw's Passage.

Yes Dek, I see what you mean. It's funny how one can forget a little thing like a railway viaduct. I've just taken a look on Google maps and its quite prominent isn't it?

I think the the streets you are looking up in the picture on post #159 is Freeth street with the shop on the corner and the side street on the left is Leach street a (cul de sac)

I've been looking at the old maps and to get Beach rd on the left you would have to be standing on the corner of Icknield Square and if that was the case there would be a curve in the road in front of you.

The shop has long gone but the Lesbrook building is still there (minus the little gable). Looks like it's still commercial use too.Viv.
