"Here Comes Summer" from about 1960. Can't remember who sang it but it was always on the turntable that year when I had to make a choice between two lads. One worked at Lucas and was leaving for Australia and the other, well I married the other. Life is all about choices isn't it?

Katie Melua "Call off the Search" This one is for my daughter who met her husband to be after a dreadful loss.

I won't spend my life
Waiting for an angel to descend
Searching for a rainbow with an end
Now that I've found you
I'll call off the search
I won't spend my life
Gazing at the stars in the sky
Wondering if love will pass me by
Now that I've found you
I'll call off the search

Can't hear it without shedding a tear.

Pavarotti - singing "Ch'ella mi creda" Not so much tears, but tingling up and down my spine.

Pretty diverse lot aren't we?

I just re-read all the posts on this forum, a great topic Paul. :)

JY I listened to Ed Stewart on Radio 2 tonight, and he gave John Lennon the top spot. One of the songs he played was Beautiful Boy, written for Julian. Truly brill.

Here Comes Summer was a No 1 for Jerry Keller
it was later recorded by Cliff Richard and also the Dave Clark 5

Being born at the end of 1945 the 60s was my era for music, I love all that stuff but what's special?
Simon and Garfunkel
Their songs are tied in with so many things in my life, some happy and some sad
My kids have got instructions to play "The Boxer" at my funeral ( not for some time yet, I hope )

Absolutely John
Bridge over troubled Water is of course brilliant but it's got to be The Boxer every time for me

You've got me remembering things now
It was 1969 or 1970
It was Saturday night and I was sat in the Aston Hotel waiting for some friends and somebody put "The Boxer" on the jukebox
I'd never heard the song before but it grabbed me instantly
I went and had a look on the jukebox to see what was playing and when I saw "Simon and Garfunkel" it didn't mean a thing because at that time I'd never heard of them.
But that Saturday night was the start of a lifelong love affair and my introduction to some of the best modern music going!

Of course all these views are subjective, we've all got our own tastes and it's all down to whatever grabs you personally.
Some people are grabbed by The Beatles, some are grabbed by The Stones
Have any of you ever been grabbed by The Dooleys?

Paul Simon is amongst the worlds finest songwriters, and like Jerry says all these views are subjective, for me the greatest of these tracks is..............................

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
About a vision softly creeping
That left its seed while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
And whispers in the sound of silence."
Paul Simon, "The Sound Of Silence"

Agree with every one of the above posts.  I have posted before about being at a concert by Cliff Richard in the earlyh 1960s at the Launceston (Tasmania) Town Hall where there were very few teens gathered to hear him.  He told us all to hitch up our chairs (plastic type) and gather round and he gave us a terrific concert.  No one has mentioned one of my favourites Rod Stewart - love his Maggie May.  I think he is sooo sexy.  I also love classical music and among others the music of Grainger is a favourite.  I have a friend who plays in a wind orchestra dedicated to Percy Grainger and have one of their CDs - Molly on the Shore, Early One Morning, Country Gardens.  We all know "In an English Country Garden" but Grainger's music is much more than that.  My friend plays a bass clarinet.  I also used to be a dedicated follower of Leonard Cohen and still admire his prose if not his voice -
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

Oh dear - if I could only write like that :)

Thank you Jerry. Yes, that's it Jerry Keller. I've given you an applaud :coolsmiley:, now watch Kandy snatch it back, the swine ::)

These are the words that make the hairs stand on the back of my neck:

Amoureuse
Strands of light upon a bedroom floor
Change the night through an open door
I'm awake but this not my home
For the first time I'm not alone
Reaching out I touch another skin
Breathing out as he is breathing in
Deep inside I feel my soul aflame
Can my love ever be the same?
I should have told him
I'd do anything if I could hold him
For just another day, for just another day
His love is something I will not forget
When I am far away, when I am far away
I feel the rainfall of another planet
Another planet

Close together in the afterglow
I remember how his loving flow
Turned the key into another world
Made a woman of a simple girl
Daylight comes as we both know it must
Soon my fantasy will turn to dust
But I would give him anything he asked
If my love could be my last?

I should have told him
I'd do anything if I could hold him
For just another day, for just another day
His love is something I will not regret
When I am far away, when I am far away
I feel the rainfall of another planet
When I am far away, when I am far away
I feel the rainfall of another planet

The song my sister chose for her husbands funeral when he died in 1999, far too young.

Buddy Holly singing 'ITS RAINING IN MY HEART'

Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
there's always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memories seep from my veins
let me be empty
oh and weightless then maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you feel
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line
and everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lies
that you make up for all that you lack
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe
in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you feel
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
you're in the arms of the angel

Earlier this year a friend's mother died. She had been very ill and though her passing was vey much mourned, we celebrated her life. After a service in church we  went to the Crematorium where the vicar read just the commital and at her own request Robbie Williams song ANGEL flooded the chapel.

Ice will melt, water will boil
You and I can shake off this mortal coil
It's bigger than us
You don't have to worry about it
Ready or not here comes the drop
You feel lucky when you know where you are
It's gonna come true
Here in your arms I remember

It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
feel the same way too

It's easy when you don't try
Going on first impressions
Man in a cage has made his confession
You've seen me at my worst
And it won't be the last time I'm down there
I want you to know I feel completely at ease
Read me like a book
That's fallen down between your knees
Please let me have my way with you

It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
feel the same way too

It's circumstantial, it's nothing written in the sky
And we don't even have to try
Shaking like mud, buildings of glass
Sink into the bay they'll be under the rocks again
You don't have to say I know you're afraid

It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
feel the same way too

It's circumstantial, it's something I was born to
It's only natural, can't help it if I want to

(Its also my phone's ringtone)

All records on David Jacobs Sunday evening show on Radio Two at 11.00pm :smitten: I can play it all the week while I'm talking to you nice people ;)

Songs like You made me love you :smitten:
What will I do :smitten:

Alice Fay sang that Alf, pity I can't think of the name of the film. I saw it at The Odeon, Perry Barr with a lad whose heart I later broke. :'(

I saw a repeat on Tv last night of the the best loved Love Songs, I was surprised that No.1 was Unchained Melody sung by the Righteous Brothers, nice song, but I wouldn't have voted it top. They also didn't mention that originally it was sung by Al Hibbert and that Jimmy Young had a hit with it.

One of my favourite singers Nat King Cole had two records in the top 10, Unforgettable and .......I;'ve forgotten the other one.

Di, she's having you on! :coolsmiley: If she's not then I reckon it must be Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, or Mona Lisa, or When I Fall In Love, or...

Paul, I think it was "When I fall in love". I also use to love his songs, Too Young and Dance Ballerina Dance, in fact I don't think he ever made a bad record or "murdered" a song, he had a lovely velvety voice.

... by John Denver
I love John Denver too...
My Sweet Lady is beautiful by him...
and Sunshine On my Shoulder as Rod mentioned.
I think his early death was really tragic... :( another plane accident...too many of them with pop stars..

Ha!! 'My sweet lady' is 'our' song..

'I wish that you could know, how much I love you'
Actually, she does...I tell her every day.

I think for me and my husband when we got together in '88 it was Some People by Cliff Richard...especially the bit in bold...

Some people they tease one another
Take pride in themselves
Keeping the other one down
Well I’m not like that at all

Some people they hurt one another
They love to see
Hurt in the other one’s eyes
Well I’m not like that at all

Some people are born for each other
They love to walk
Holding the other one’s hand
They always understand
Some people cry
Some people know why

Oh ah ah
Some people they use one another
So aimlessly
Not like lovers do
Well I’m not like that at all

Some people they long for each other
They love to walk
Holding the other one’s hand
They always understand
Some people cry
Some people know why

With a word unspoken
With a voice unheard
When a thought is broken
By a tender word
When a heart is moved
When a heart is thrown
The silence tells you
You’re not alone

Some people are born for each other...

(some people are born for each other)
They love to walk holding the other one
(some people they long for each other)
They love to talk holding theother one
(some people are born for each other)
They love to walk holding the other one
Holding the other one
Holding each other

and I've just seen another beautiful Cliff Richard song title while I was looking for the lyrics to the above..
Ocean Deep https://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/cliff-richard/32203.html

and I love 'The Water Is Wide' by him too.. (based on an old Gaelic tune)

When I was a young girl, my father, who had the voice of an angel, would sing "Danny Boy." I can't hear that song without tears coming to my eyes.

Norma

Norma - we will have to get a copy of the song to play for you at the 60's evening in November.

A beautiful song Norma, no doubt sung by a fantastic guy (your dad). :)
