A small part of Yardley Wood known as Happy Valley, was a poplar area fetting away from it all. This picture is about 1914

Thanks for the photo's Sticher. Particularly interested in the Happy Valley one (See Happy Valley Thread). Any chance of a better resolution?

Cheers

RobertS, these pics are from a very old book but I will see what I can do.

Who remembers the restaurant in Cannon Hill Park?

Stitch,

Nice photos but we never had any money for restaurants so although I was in the park most days I can't remember it.

Stitcher I remember the restaurant in Cannon Hill Park very well, my dad loved that park and we often went on sunny Sunday afternoons and mom & dad would have a tray of tea and I would have a glass of pop. Mossy I think they could afford it as my older brother and sisters were grown up and they both worked.

Yes Sylvia, I remember it also.
Graham, the picture is from a book published in 1950 by Birmingham City Council and it lists every penny of the finances, i/e revenue collected from all sources and then it lists the costs. Public Transport, cemetaries liesure including parks and libraries, sewage disposal, everything but it does not give much information about parks, what they collected minus what they cost=profit.

Here we have two shots of Pershore Rd South at Kings Norton. The first is about 1930 and the second is after a road widening programme.

I lived near the Great Western for a short time in the early 60s and although I am not a drinker I did have a pint in there. I saw an old timbered pub in Cannon Hill Park last year. It was in a state of disrepair but I was told the plan was to renovate it soon. I would imagine this was the Golden Lion.

Stitcher and John

I loved the Happy Valley photo. My Mom often talked about going there when she was a child. Her family moved out of a court in Clifton Road Aston to a house in Bromwall Road in Billesley in 1924, My Mom said that often as a treat the family would have a day out at Happy Valley, and she spoke about these outings with such pleasure that they obviously had many lovely memories for her.

"Situated between Alcester Lanes End and the Maypole, crowds thronged the area on summer weekends. Boats and punts could be hired and day-trippers could buy tea at the wooden bungalows and huts and sit at the tables provided outside. There was also an open stage where pierrots would perform to keep the crowds amused" (from The Story of Typhoo & the Birmingham Tea Industry).

There also used to be an Easter Fair held at Happy Valley, with swing boats and coconut shies, helter skelters etc.

Judy 39, I wish people today could get pleasure from such things. It might be better all round if I dont go down that road.

If that is the Golden Lion in it's old spot in Dygbeth then it is the only photo that I have seen of this case. And now I know what that great pole was for out front...hoisting knights.

I remember that style of house...I think they were 4 plex flats. They look pretty decent compared to what they replaced. This style was used in other locations too. Was the Kingston a Cinema on the Coventry Road.

Yews Rupert, it was almost opposite the old Bus garage. It is at the far end of the row of buildings in this picture.

Great photo Stitcher...Left hand-side going up the Cov from the bottom...opposite was the Old Lodge Pub...Saturday morning after the matinee' in the Kingston, we'd belt down the hill on the grass you can see; either as Hopalong Cassidy, Flash Gordon, Ming the Merciless, The Bowrie Boys or any number of hero's. Saturday afternoon back up the hill to watch the Blues...best day of the week!

Our crowd was the same Beamish but we went to The Olton and played on the way home along Gospel Lane.

The firm Beard Bros, brewers appears in directories in High St from 1880 to 1892. They are listed in 1896 or 1876, so this gives some idea as to tnhe date of the picture of the Golden Lion

Nice pictures again John, the one of Broad St. stirs a few memories, although they are a bit later than the picture.
