gone but not forgotten
Mike, that's another lovely picture. It appearsto be post-1930, because in the distance you can see the back of the English Electric or Vulcan-bodied Regents that were delivered in 1930 (EE 369-408; Vulcan 409-443).
What I am wondering about is the location of the later tram loading shelters outside the front of the station. I can moreorless remember the track layout in the late 1930s, after the loading island and shelters were built and all the trams were removed from the old stub terminus. A single track connection remained to the outward-bound track from Steelhouse Lane terminus of the Erdington trams, with a double kink very much like the the right hand track in your picture. That leads me to think that the island and shelters were built next to the old track, which was not moved, while the other tracks were abandoned and later removed (perhaps at night?).
I think I can remember or have seen a picture which clearly shows the connection to Steelhouse Lane, which was by facing point.
When the new shelters were brought into use, all the tram routes but one used the loop, the exception - the Lozells via Hockley and Hamstead Road route 25 - still using the inbound track up to the top of Snow Hill and reversing on the crossover until the route was abandoned in August 1933, but I seem to remember that the track and wiring were kept until 1939.
