Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

Another aspect of the cashless society which people accept without any thought. It is suggested that it it to our benefit - occasionally it is - but the real reason, I feel it is far more profitable for the car park owners to make even more money without their effort.

Yes, they made savings by not having to employ someone to sit in a car park kiosk or to travel to their car parks to empty the money out of their ticket machines. Sacking them may have slightly increased the money they make, but it didn't add to customer service and it added to the ranks of the unemployed. :(

I'm now always checking unrecognisable phone contacts that appear on my phone. This one has been persistent, haven't answered it. Have reported it.
The problem is that the scammers just keep going regardless of how many times you get hit or repot them. Our local hospital just had their/our files hacked and there is little that can be done except spend more on cyber security keep our fingers crossed and who pays for that in the long run!

The problem is nothing seems to happen to anyone, other than to the victims. It would be nice if a bit more importance could be placed on these scams by those responsible for them occasionally being brought to justice. The chances of that happening to those operating from the UK seem to be slim to none and to those operating from abroad zero. At present like shoplifting it seems anyone can get away with it. :(

I had this text this morning. (I have deleted the link at the end). No idea where they think they saw my cv

Hi, I'm from Tiktok HR department, we have viewed your CV and your CV is a perfect fit for us, we are pleased to invite you to become a part time partner, pay £200-£500 per day, please contact me for job details:

Tried to report it but it wouldn't let me so I copied text and sent it instead.

It is a one sided fight. You and I have to be vigilant whilst doing what we do in our lives. For the scammers, it is their job, often backed by an organisation providing an infrastructure. It gets wearing, and makes us a bit paranoid. In my case, both the home phone and mobile will block calls that are not in the contact list, (sending them directly to answerphone), although I get a notification of the time and number so I can review if I feel the urge. Just have to make sure the doctor and nurses mobiles are in the list, they tend to use mobiles rather than a desk phone.

Perhaps it is for manually reviewing items flagged as 'unsuitable' (understatement). For that job, the start point for negotiations would be £500 per hour.

It is probably standard operating practice to never target the country you are operating from. So zero it is.

Andrew.

My internet service provider "VirgIInmedia-O2" (sic) informs me that my service has now been blocked because I haven't contacted them, despite being warned many times!! . Therefore, please ignore this post since I am unable to send it.

With regards to most phone scams coming from abroad, I was wondering if it is possible to block all numbers starting 00.? I don't have anyone who would call me from outside the UK, so to be able to block these calls on landline and mobile would be useful.

Sadly, probably not. Number spoofing is almost trivial to do. Over here for example, landline prefix code numbers are allocated on major area/sub division, much the same as UK city codes. I have had calls seemingly originating from very close to my number, with a suspiciously Indian rendering of French on the answering machine. The reckoning is that a number from your area has more chance of being genuine, (Doctor, local administration etc.), so you might be more inclined to answer it.
On one occasion I did answer, the caller switched from Indian French to Indian English in a second. They are not amateurs.

Yes, we get many calls with area codes close or in our phone numbers. My wife has a NJ number and I have TN. Currently I and scheduling doctors appointments and am afraid not to pick the phone!

Received this decent "Black Friday" warning from First Direct today, that might be worth sharing:

Remember – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is

Before you do anything else, Take 5. Stop, think, and don’t get pressured into anything.

If you’re unsure about an offer, confirm it’s legit by double-checking the brand or retailer’s official website.

Always check websites are secure by looking for the padlock symbol in the address bar.

If something feels off, consider paying with a credit card or payment option that offers fraud protection.

Always log off or sign out of your online banking or shopping accounts.
