Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

Regarding your 1953 Townhall party you was lucky to get invited which I never got invited to either and I was the grandson to the supplyers
Of all the provisions for that particular venue which the council provided in 1953 all the party foods and cakes
My grand parents and his family was the caterers to the Birmingham city council from the early thirty right through to the fifthy,s
And also to the old GPO Post offices and all there functions they was the high society caterer of Birmingham for the high society
With all there silver ware and high class classes they provided all foods with waitress silver cuttly etc including the top champaynes
On that particular day of the event he called into our house to speak to my mother his one and only daughter and told her what he provided
There premises and food provisions was at Aston cross just up the road the jelfs was connected to the old council in many ways going back
To old bush house its self may I add that during the 1930s depression the town hall served as a centre for providing
Food to the children of the poor. Astonian,,,,,,,

On the picture of Clarendon Street I am the small child on the extreme left of the picture, being held by my cousin Josie Morris, another cousin Jenny Morris 3 months older than me is the small girl right in the centre. My mother informs me that they had a pretty sorry set of flags draped across the road and a lorry drove up the street and tore the lot down! The firm that the lorry belonged to replaced all the flags with new ones much better than the originals and that's what you see in the picture.
 
how wonderful to have yourself and some of your family on that photo and the street looks just grand..

Coronation Day, I was 5yrs old but actually remember it well. The party was held in the canteen of the Watsonian sidecar company in Albion Road , Greet. As kids we had the usual party food and to my delight an orange. I remember my mom taking her slippers off to enter a short race, which she won. Her prize was a hearth set, with the bristles on the brush being Red, White and Blue. The road was tarred and coverd wih granit chips, the feet of her stockings were ripped to shreds. happy days..
 
I was stationed in Hong Kong at Kai Tak airport with the RAF in 1953, my late Wife had recently joined me. The Chinese organised a wonderful parade with long 'dragons' and firecrackers. At night we had a firework display, really spectacular as only the Chinese can do, an unforgettable day/night. Hard to believe it is over 60 years ago. Eric
 
63 years today since the Coronation. It only seems like errrrrr 63 years. I was on holiday that week with my parents in Brighton. We travelled up to London on Coronation Day and took up a position near Westminster Abbey. I'm sure that we were something like 10th row from the front but I had a bit of a view using a cardboard periscope, with mirror, that was on sale. I can always say that I was there but unfortunately missed one of the Birmingham street parties that everyone seemed to enjoy. I was 10-years old at the time. Dave.

I was picked by the headmaster at Pigott street school along with one other to attend the Lord Mayors party at the Town Hall. Does anyone remember me or the party?
 
My mom, me Steve and my brother John, who was born at 3/21 Pigott street, Edgbaston Birmingham 15. Which was our official address.
PS. we also had another brother called Terry.

Just come across these long forgotten 1953 Coronation pictures. Residents of Hadland Rd., Garretts Green. We had moved into the local school(Blakenhale infants) because of the rain.
 
wow jim they are fantastic....when we post photos such as these we always hope that someone is looking in who maybe able to put names to the faces....what a thrill it would be for them...thank you for sharing them with us jim

Hello Lyn. I'm the very very young Lurchphoic and Jim did kindly bring these pictures to my attention. What great pics. My grand parents, Parents, two sister and a brother, me in my mother's arms and my younger brother on the way. My family are very happy. PhilC.
 
At York Road School, Hall Green, we each had our photo taken for the Coronation. This was then inserted into a souvenir cardboard frame. Mine is below. The haircut was typical for the time, or was it just me? Dave.

Had started work AT Dunlop in the export department Betty Marsden who lived either in Summer Road or South Street, Erdington and also worked there had a television, so two or three of us crammed into her front room with dozens of others to watch it on this small black and white screen. I think it was her Mum and Dads afterwards I think we went for a drink...or two
