What a great picture Bernie, I wonder where they were all heading to? And were the ladies all wearing red coats because it was the fashion or was it a uniform for somewhere I wonder?

Ther's the BSA and Small Heath railway station is under the bridge they are standing on or Coventry Road 3mins walk looks like the same family to me though
 
Know this sight well its knocking off time at the Bsa ... Worked there on Sub Contract early 60's and it was just the same as photo,,

Lovely photo I remember the cobbled road so well which was aslo on Anderton Road (just on the right),down Anderton Road a bit to the right I remember the Work horses for the railway, they were wonderful to see. Thanks for the memory lane visit.

That's just how I remember it too Phylis Nicklin took a great photo didn't she , hers must be the best collection of Birmingham photo's of that era
 
Yardley Road, then renamed Yardley Green Road, Little Bromwich, Birmingham, Warwickshire. . . . (or that's what it says on my birth certificate of 1953) ;-)
The photo is taken from the Green Lane/ Hobmoor Road corner and shows the Primitive Methodist Church in Blake Lane, which was rebuilt facing onto Yardley Green Road. We got married at the renamed Small Heath Methodist Church there 40 years ago next month.

et53 good photo , I w2ould imagine late 19th early 20thC, but don't the people look like wraiths covered from head to toe and so drab. paul

If the picture had been taken with colour film it might not have been as drab. Apart from the lack of colour , because the black and white film used then was not sensative to red, any red would look very dark
 
I agree Lyn, they are smashing pics. Can't believe the state of St Thomas's school, it really is run down isn't it? Looking at the chidren's clothing, perhaps it was early 1950's. Thank you Bernie for posting them.

I was shocked at the St Thomas's school photo - I have only ever seen a drawing of the school and this is obviously the back. It does look down at heel and rather sad. Does anyone know if the school records are preserved and if they are online?

I found the statue Viv



It was still in Auchinleck Square, although the area has been completely blocked off. With only the walkways from Broad Street to Islington Rpw Middleway open (with hoardings).
