Our Mom used to say if we were a bit checky--I'll snatch ya breath if ya dont shut up--with her hand clench up like a fist--we soon shut up. She was only just five foot, but we knew when enough was enough-
Our Gran had some funny sayings -a few of them already on here--black over Bills'others--in his oil tot-I think means just happy--go and wash ya moey {face}.
It's been great hearing all these saying. Happy days. :2funny:
If someone was bowlegged you would say "they couldn't stop a pig in an entry"
For someone who was crafty you'd say "watch him he'll pinch the milk out ya tea"
Someone who was honest was as straight as a die
And I think we all said if we saw an ambulance "hold ya collar never swalla never die in ambulance"
Has anyone heard of Dead Mans Pennies? up our end no one whould touch them.
They was the pennies you put on someones eyes when they died to keep the eyes shut
Daft as a brush as I had anything you could spend
Dad, always told us kids to mind our P's & Q's. which untill recently I did not know what the real explanation was, but have been given this. THE STRAIGHTFORWARD EXPLANATION OF THE SAYING IS ONE SHOULD MIND ONES "PLEASE'S & EXCUSE'S" Espesially if going to a party. :crazy2:
Another version is that children learning to read & write had to take care distinguishing between the letters "P" & "Q" as did printers apprentices when setting type.
there is a moral to this and it is. BEING OF CAREFUL ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE IN GENERAL WOULD LEAD NATURALLY TO GOOD MANNERS .
