hi aston , fist of all i sncererly opologise if i have had offended any body , in useing that word , on the sight , especialy knowing there his a lot of ladies on the sight , and i sincererly opologise to the lovely ladies on our sight . it all depends on the contects you want to take , after all am i or not right in saying there was a female name for girl , or a ladyies name of the word used , and i beleive it was quite common , but not used now , but the expression was used often , ya or nay ?. so has sombody said recently , mind your p ,s and q,s so next time i will please forgive me , aston ,, best wishes ,, astonian ,,
 
Astonian you haven't offended anyone I have an Aunt Fanny (did have she is dead now)
Where their is  Muck their is Brass 
PS I should have said Fanny was my aunt and a right old crotchety old ***** she was to boot 
She wouldn't give ya the drippings of her nose or the scrappings from her toes
 
Tsk..all these 'supposedly' old sayings pale into nothingness compared to the one I know....

hi ast. thats alright i did realised that you knew the rest of the saying ,but i did wonder why you did,nt finish off but there again i would only imagine that it were only the men folk in the old gone bye days whom would have used that expression , and not in front of a lady. still not to worry no harm or insults to any body , thanks ast. just one thing ,, its all queite on the western front ,, not a soul to be seen ,, best wishes astonian ,;;;;;;;;;
 
ASTONIAN As long as its not" HELL'S ANGELS" of WWI . I can live with it being ALL queit on any FRONT AT THE MOMENT. LOL

It's amazing how many of the "old sayings" we use on a daily basis as they have definitely become part of our lingo. There are some explanations of some common British sayings on this site. I was looking for "codswallop" in particular and there is a derivation

Peter, they are two different sayings. I think How's your father off for dripping was a saying by one of the old time commedians. How's your father was used by my family to mean you were doubtful of what you were being told..
 
as a youngster iheard my dad say "thems not so blind as them who dont listen"took me years to fathom it

What about.......
Goo an chase yer granny around the gas works( Get lost)
And.. put wood in hole (shut door)
 
Dennis - my grandmother used to say "put wood in hole" as in close the door too!!

She also used to say "you are not made of glass" - if I were stood in her way/view of say the TV if she was watching. I sippose it was her way of saying "shift out of the way - I can't see tv" :2funny: :2funny:

My Grandmother used to be funny at times - sometimes I smile when I think of her old sayings ;D
 
You think I've got eyes in the back of my Head one of my Moms I'm sure she had :)
 
My mum used to say "So you think I'm an Octopus? - How many hands do I have?" and she'd then wave her hands around at us when we were annoying her >:D
 
I don't know about houses and horses but there was one..'Once around the deck and twice around his neck..cant remember the rest.
 
My Nan use to say put the wood in the hole to close the door, when she knew something we'd done and we didn't know how she would say she eyes in the back of her head ??? or " I wasn't born yesterday you know".
