OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Next we have another beer seller - not a pub (?) no location or year but plenty of clues in the picture for you sleuths. Centre building has a wide spread of leaded windows and nice pedements around the side door. Traditional window display to the provisions shop to the left, and a Players cigarette sign on the front - imagine!!. I also find it interesting how the chimney seems to climb independently on the left with another in the middle of the building.

Just to tidy up we return to Roll 18, this has loads of duplicates and a couple of pictures with no information , first picture is more for interest as it is a street with a row of shops and pub on the corner - building on the left with the large "S" brackets are quite distinctive and the row of shops with the blinds down further along the road a classic street scene.

Next picture is more of a rescue mission , to show the image, we have the before
20230108090813_06.jpg

and the after - corner pub with a nice old ford outside street sign says "GEN" street - does that sound right - any offers gratefully received.
EDIT: Gem Street - thanks Astoness

I think the large S brackets were to strengthen the walls of buildings?

The Stork PH corner of Asylum Road and High Street Aston, shop with blinds was the co-op.

Finally, this, I assume is part of the ICC / Arena redevelopment - but what and where are we looking? As with all I have posted tonight they are on a negative sheet which the information sheet says 1-4, city views, well we have had more than that and no other information is provided. Over to you - and a plan?

I thought this may have been taken from the King Edwards Rd side of the ICC , those flats and what appear to be maisonettes in front of them have put the block on that idea .

The next selection is titled "In and around Great Hampton Street" I am guessing at the locations happy to be corrected but I do have some idea!!
Next door to Lucas is this fine selection of buildings , is this Cannings? Looks like three distinct buildings, furthest with all the verticals and large pedestal at the roof line , next with the cream stone work, arched windows and leaded windows, and closest with more of a mixture of styles arched and square windows some leaded some not.

Across the road is this stylish building arched stonework on the ground floor , checker board stone work on the sides and an interesting large inset arch in the middle and all windows been leaded. Not sure of the history of this building though it seems to have modern buildings either side.
EDIT: Check out A Sparks information on this building.

Next is the Bridge Inn Monument Road, and you can just make out the cast iron urinal with lamp over it very useful on dark evening I imagine. Taken 2nd March 1961 to the left of the people is that a " Bus clock" I would try and name it but there are too many experts !!

No date I am afraid but at least we have this as Monument Road, all boarded up but with both M&B and Ansells signs. Interesting step on the roof line . Like the shop next door with Brooke Bond Dividend Tea and the General Store sign over the door.
EDIT: - No. 104 Monument Road.Thanks BrummyLad.

There's something wonderful about Outdoors/ off licences! So characterful and familiar. I love photos like this.
Is there a separate thread devoted to Outdoors, I wonder?
Alf

On the opposite corner is The Church Inn , historic corner pub, circa 1840, so it says, looks like it extends to the building next door, corner entrance but move to the left and there are more traditional features. The building on the left is unusual in shape and has an almost continental feel.

buildings still there steve

Next we are still in Great Hampton Street and we have the Lord Clifden, not sure of the history of this place, but a quick search on this forum and it seems most of you have been in there !! Single storey with a couple of lamps by the entrance , like the Rover and note the man top left putting up the advert on the wall

Further toward Hockley Brook we have Pelican Works on the corner with Hockley Street, always remember looking out for the Pelican when on the bus home from "town". Looking down on a number of adverts and always seemed a bit worse for wear. Nicely proportioned building with all the windows topped with curved stonework and a stone fretwork around the roofline too.
