OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

mike i think the site of that demo is on the town hall side... the buildings we are talking about shown in the photo on post 1164 was on the opposite side and most of them are still there..i think

Perhaps I should add that I meant that you can see that behind the cascade, all the building is modern

sorry mike i thought you meant the demo site in you screen shot was where the building marked in pink was..so just the facade is left now then...oh well i guess its better than nothing

moving over to the Jewellery Quarter now - still the 19th January 1991, slightly wider view than previous of Frank Clissold in Vyse Street and the view of the side of the property, from this view you can see how large these buildings are, also note on the corner of the building there is just he remains of "Ltd" of an old sign. Like the square shaping just under the eaves, andf the pillars either side of the front door.

If we turn around in the previous image we come to this view - cast iron urinal, a once common and essential part of the street scene for some. Rather bland background which has changed these days with the Jewellery Quarter Metro station to the left of theurinal, which is still there but looking tired and out of use.

Moving now to the corner of Hockley Hill and Key Hill, Harry Smith Ironmongers, Established 1824, icon of a building in this location , painted sign on the corner and around onto the Hockley Hill frontage, , large building but unfortunaly has now gone into liquidation with the signs largly painted over these days.

Still in the Jewellery Quarter and a view over a wall but which one and what are we looking at ? We have a large blocked tunnel portal witha smaller entrance to the left, lot of derelict buildings and dumped rubbish , any offers

I think this tunnel might be the same as this photo taken in the early 1970s

10A entrance to tunnel.jpg

This, I think, is the entrance to the subway shown in red on the 1950s below, and the trees are in the cemetery over Pitsford st

map 1950s showing subway at Hockley yard.jpg

mike i was just about to suggest pitsford st...will take a good look at your map and photo but i think you could be correct

You can just see this structure on these photos taken late 70's / early 80's - I'm standing right where Jewellery Quarter station is now:-

Here are some "full frontal" views - note the huge crack above the tunnel that has been repaired in the colour photo posted above in #1191:-

There is a new building to the left of the colour photo in #1191 - heres what was in the same location then:-

And for context - this is how they sit compared to where the main Hockley tunnel portal was (and still is):-

And in case you are wondering what was inside this mini-tunnel:-

The tunnel seems to have a bend in it and comes out in the photo on post #1189:-

This is looking out of the tunnel looking towards the old Hockley station site just as building work was getting underway - note building on the left of photo in #1189 is gone:-

Goods shed totally gone by now and walls being held up by acro's:-

Fast forward to 2024 - scene looks a bit different now - this is the Hockley tunnel mouth shown in the photo in #1192 with Jewellery Quarter Station on the right - note how the painted area above the tunnel has survived - I believe this is so semaphore signals mounted above the track could be seen more easily:-

And this is what has been built over it - called "The Goods Yard"!

It looks like the tunnel complex is no longer there, although it is hard to tell due to the trees etc:-

If only we could see/hear some of the memories that these places hold!
