Great Russell Street

Lindev, Hi Mrs Jones (my nan) was married twice, pearl was her stepdaughter, now married to Councillor Mike Bird leader of Walsall Council, and my step cousin. My Mom was Lil Fowkes, and my Uncle Gerard who was an Arnhem hero has just had his 93rd birthday.

Thanks John for those fantastic photos. I have enjoyed looking at them so much. My family lived in this street although it was a lot earlier than your pictures - from about 1870 to 1925 - but I never knew this until I started doing my family history. I grew up in Handsworth just off Soho Hill, so I wasn't that far away. If only I had known about the connection I could have visited the street while it still existed. Your photos have given me a wonderful insight into Gt Russell Street.

Mikejee, could i ask a favour? While you are searching for Lyn's request.Could you let me know where 178 Gt Russell st is please.Moss

No 22 and 178 are at opposite ends of the street. Maps below give no 22 (no 17 was already on it from another query)
in blue and no 178 in red

Mike, thanks to John and yourself,i now know where my gt,gt,grandfather lived and also have a picture of his address in 1871.Moss

hospital Street which is still there I think ran parallel to Gt Russel St. Gt Russel St ceased to exist but Hospital Stree was not renamed and remains there . My Dad worked at Newmans in that Street.

I don't think Hospital St was ever Gt Russell St.
Hospital St was once broken up into Hospital St,Upper Hospital St and Lower Hospital St.I think in that order from Summer Lane end.I feel sure Mike has a map showing that.Moss

Hi everyone and thank you for your posts. I have been to look today and you are all correct Gt Russel Street no longer exists. The area is all newer housing and where my husbands family lived is where the flats are on New John St West. Thanks again for your help.Angela.
