Thanks John for those fantastic photos. I have enjoyed looking at them so much. My family lived in this street although it was a lot earlier than your pictures - from about 1870 to 1925 - but I never knew this until I started doing my family history. I grew up in Handsworth just off Soho Hill, so I wasn't that far away. If only I had known about the connection I could have visited the street while it still existed. Your photos have given me a wonderful insight into Gt Russell Street.

Mikejee, could i ask a favour? While you are searching for Lyn's request.Could you let me know where 178 Gt Russell st is please.Moss

No 22 and 178 are at opposite ends of the street. Maps below give no 22 (no 17 was already on it from another query)
in blue and no 178 in red

Mike, thanks to John and yourself,i now know where my gt,gt,grandfather lived and also have a picture of his address in 1871.Moss

hospital Street which is still there I think ran parallel to Gt Russel St. Gt Russel St ceased to exist but Hospital Stree was not renamed and remains there . My Dad worked at Newmans in that Street.

I don't think Hospital St was ever Gt Russell St.
Hospital St was once broken up into Hospital St,Upper Hospital St and Lower Hospital St.I think in that order from Summer Lane end.I feel sure Mike has a map showing that.Moss

Hi everyone and thank you for your posts. I have been to look today and you are all correct Gt Russel Street no longer exists. The area is all newer housing and where my husbands family lived is where the flats are on New John St West. Thanks again for your help.Angela.

myself and lynne webb was also down there last week for a look around in perticular visiting st georges churchyard....armed with a map it was easy to work out that what is now called st georges park (play area) was where the old st georges school and st georges place would have stood...it was hard to imagine all that life going on back in the day as it is quite open now...

Hi Everyone,i found 2 great photos of Great Russell Street in 1967 on Phillis Nicklin website. Search Great Russell Street and click on 50s and 60s Birmingham. I think the one with the boy is taken looking down towards New John Street and the other to the right, note the position of the red Mini and other cars. I wonder if anyone on the forum recognises the boy in the picture or does anyone know if the block of flats are still there. Angela.

My Nan and Grandad lived on Great Russell Street, Nan lived 186 and Grandad back of 186! i think most of my family lived on that road at some point (Martins, Harris's and Sargents), until they demolished it, so if anyones family lived by them 1920's - 1940's be good to hear from you
