Great Russell Street

Hello Judy,Sorry i don't know what year the picture is.The church was built in 1822.Enlarged in 1884 and demolished in 1960.
You might find this picture of interest,it was posted by Lyn on another thread,it shows chidren in a court back of 248 Great Russell Street in 1967.I doubt if had changed much since your G.G.Grandfathers lived there.

Mossg - Thanks for the information about St George' Church, and for the lovely photo of children in the Court.

Lyn, I have had another browse through the St George's threads and although I have seen them before, as more information about my family comes to light, various comments although missed first time round, become very interesting.

If my memory is Ok (and it rarely is) margaret russel might be the woman who I called aaunty. did she live in round about the house number 90 just up from the bookies on the corner of Frankfort ST?
 
Hi Moss i am almost sure it was called the Salutation.i used to knock about with the landlords son he used to let a crowd of us use the the room upstairs to play our records.not quiet sure i could be wrong.

hi richard...there were two salutaions close to each other..one in alma st and the other at the bottom of summer lane/constitution hil....there are pics of both on the forum

Joining this thread about 11 months late....

My mom lived in Great Russell Street, she's 78 now and can't quite remember the number (7 back of 11 or something like). I am taking the photos to show her to see if it brings back any memories, she left in the 40s I think, the family moved to Kingstanding (Sidcup Road)

Family names from there were Ashford & Russell (nee Twells)

Hi.....ask her if she remembers any of the Field Family, my nan Hilda , Grandad Charlie, my dad Douglas , my uncle Bob, my aunt Ellen , my aunt Margaret , they were one family in gt russell street.

I saw mom at the weekend but unfortunately she doesn't remember anyone from Gt Russell Street, She left there at 4 yrs old (around 1937) but loved the pictures and recognised them instantly.

The more I dig into family history the more people I find from this area, especially Gt Russell Street. It's a side of the family that I never knew (as mom's parents were both dead by 1952) and we were never that close to her brothers (only one surviving now). I am determined to remedy that and intend on 'mapping' the street and the houses and courts that people lived in.

I have only just started but already have 27, 28, 2/28 & 203 on documents (census' and marriage certs)... now the plan is to collate more and see if I can 'locate' them on a street map.

There is some great material on this forum (many thanks to people who have posted pics / maps etc.) any further Gt Russell Street info would be fantastic. I even found out that my Grand Uncle was a barman at the Woolpack on Summer Lane in 1911

Don,t remember her,but did she have a brother?,the reason i ask is i recall the surname,and the lad in question thought he "owned" our part of the street,due to his surname.
The only other people i remember are the Hopkins,who lived in the topmost righthand corner of the court you stepped onto as you stepped out of our backdoor.
And no surname,but there was a girl called Christine who lived up the road from us,near the shop on the corner,she was a few years older than me at the time,1962/3.
 
The block of flats on #6 was Sayer House. We moved in there in 1967 .It has now been demolished.There was a School built opp in Gt Russel St called Hampton Primary .The picture below was taken about1979/80. The Church in the background was the new St Georges. I think it was built where Frankfort St would have been?????????View attachment 61142
 
I think Sayer House was built on top of my nan's shop in Gt russell st , opposite the end of Frankfort St and diagonally opposite "The justice"
 
hi topsy...lovely school pic....you are not far out with the location of the new st georges church....it is in bridge st west....i am attaching this very good 1940s map of the area that you may want to save and use it for your reference...ive found it most useful when on the many occassions ive lost me way lol..
