Great Hampton Row

He wasn't the only one to drink in the Minerva Vaults. I spent many a Saturday lunchtime there with workmates when I worked at Cannings between '61 and '72. Unlike the White Horse Cellars (another watering hole of mine from that period) I believe it's still there and still trading as a "proper" pub.

mike if you spot this post could i have a map please confirming its location..i think the shop next to woods and potters shop is no 72 so it must be near to the star and garter pub...

Wood & potters are 72 (in red), so the pub must be 70-71.

thanks mike thats what i thought...not many photos of gt hampton row around so i was pleased to find this one...got it from the birmingham lives history fair today..

great phil thanks..i was sure i had seen that one before but could not find it so will save it now...must ask my aunt what number brearley st she lived at im sure she once told me it was only a few doors from the star and garter..

Just wished I could be 10 again and chat to her now I know a bit more about the family!
( of her own (1 died very young - in WL), Husband died when last one was 3 months old, remarried and got his half a dozen back out of Barnado's, than went to take 3 grandchildren when daughter in law died in WW2, but her family had 2, so just the 1 grandson to raise - and all in a back to back in Brearley St, & Gt Hampton Row - with no Housing Benefits and Tax Credits and whatever!
Amazing old bird - but weren't they all!
 
oh bri if only i had a quid for everytime i said...i wished i had asked more questions when they were alive and the thing is until we start delving into our family history we just did not fully appreciate the hardships and struggles they had....i agree with you completely there were some amazingly tough people around then you must be really proud of your nan as i am mine...my grandad died in 1938 just before the start of ww2..he fought for his country in ww1..gassed a couple of times which affected his health badly .. our nan was left with 3 young girls to bring up in paddington st...she had half a dozen jobs on the go including laying people out..never re married so hats off to her as well...

This site is s goldmine and you have all been brilliantly helpful. My uncles funeral is on Saturday and I know that his brothers and sisters will be delighted to see all these pics thank you all very much xxx
 
carol i think that is gt hampton st not row...pretty sure lenches was ghs oh just noticed the pelican on top of the pelican works so yes it is ghs...cracking photo though its a new one to me so thanks for posting it:)

hi kieron many thanks for the link the only one i have not seen is of knights butchers so another one to my collection...you most likely know this already but the photo of st georges church also shows the original st georges school to the right of the photo

I will be uploading more soon - I like to do a bit of research so that I can add a caption to the photographs. Oh, because I had to drop a link into Tower Street, I have another view of that butcher's shop. phil 1 and 3 i think i have posted ...most likely lost due to the hacking but pic 2 interests me as i am trying to place where abouts on gt hampton row it was taken..would help if i was an expert on trams and their routes i have an idea but will research it better later on

I have located some information about Post 184.
The date of the picture, is apparently, 13th. March, 1939. Car 594 is about to go into Livery Street from Great Hampton Row. The posters in the upper deck window details the abandonment of this route which will be 1st. April, 1939. Car 594 was built 1920/1 and lasted until sometime in 1952/3. To the right is a bus stop, all ready in place for the 69 bus service that will succeed the tram service.
Behind the horse and cart (coalmen?) is the Minerva pub -their Atkinson advert is on the wall. A little info here about the Minerva Vaults:

Over to the left is a car (a Standard Flying Ten it is suggested) outside the wire factory of Parsonages. A quick search about Parsonages revealed nothing, so I will leave that to others to research. ;)
