Oh my just seen the pic. I didn't realize the thread was 10 pages long so missed it.

Hi Jane
The Minerva pub is shown on the c 1889 map below. In the middle of the 19[SUP]th[/SUP] century many of the larger pubs brewed their own beer on the premises, often in an outhouse, and were known as retail brewers. I think this is what has probably occurred with the Minerva. I can find no mention of a minerva brewery in the Great Hampton Row area, but it is likely that the Minerva brewed its own beer, and had a small brewing facility on the premises., probably in the small bit sticking out at the back.
Having said that, there is mention (see cutting below ) of a Minerva Brewery in Beak St. I can find no mention of it in directories of about that time, but The Lamp pub is at no 20, and might well have had a small brewery attached. I don’t know if this had any connection to the Minerva pub.

hi jane happy to help..just take your time finding your way round and if you need any help just give us a shout...i was using the minerva more or less up until it became the hampton some years ago at which point i believe it was raided by police who found a massive drugs growing den going on and it has been closed ever since...from memory it only had a small back yard.not big enough to swing a cat really and the toilets were always outside..a lovely friendly pub when it was the minerva such a shame to see it as it is today...will pop down soon and see if its still boarded up..

Blimey Lyn we must have passed each other today. Went to Key Hill cemetery, lunch at the Jewellers Arms and a drive round I took a photo of the Pelican on top of the old Pelican Works in Gt Hampton Street. We looked at Minerva Vaults and thought at least the building is still there.

hi wend yes we must have passed each other...i started off in villa st as they are building new houses at the top of the street..took a few pics there then down to gt hampton row and summer lane and finished up in the white house njsw...thought it best to go today as the weather looks like its on the turn again...

No. 70 was the Star & Garter , shown in red on the c 1913 map below. The electoral roll does not list him there 1930 or 1935

In 1930 it was someone completely different and the property is not listed in 1939, but in 1935 it was occupied by Matilda Lawrence & William Beddoes Have modified map in earlier post and 76 is marked in blue

The original photo that I have re posted on this thread has been posted on the Facebook page. This was a comment made by Dot Cooper. The photo looks like Colemore Terrace in Great Hampton Row. Two of my aunts lived there in the 1940s. This may explain the confusion.

Hi Wendy, Thanks to your cousin in USA who sent the picture of Gt Hampton Row my Great Granddad Thomas Mayo my Great Grandmother Esther nee Ingram with there children Thomas & Ivy .. My granddad said his dad used to drink in the Minerva Pub.
My Gt Gran was a Dress Maker along with Ivy Gt Granddad was a building worker a Plasterer while Thomas was a Silver Polisher ..

Once again Wendy may Thanks Pete Ex Pat

He wasn't the only one to drink in the Minerva Vaults. I spent many a Saturday lunchtime there with workmates when I worked at Cannings between '61 and '72. Unlike the White Horse Cellars (another watering hole of mine from that period) I believe it's still there and still trading as a "proper" pub.

hi folks here is a new one well i think it is...gt hampton row 1961

mike if you spot this post could i have a map please confirming its location..i think the shop next to woods and potters shop is no 72 so it must be near to the star and garter pub...

thanks mike..
