Great Hampton Row

It is the roundabout at the junction of masshouse lane and Redditch Road, near kings norton green. The version I have says it was 1950

Lindy, having looked at old and new maps of Brearley St in relation to Gt Hampton Row.I feel sure your relatives lived on the same spot as these 60s built shops,that are still there today.moss

hi moss those shops are opposite where st georges place was give or take a yard or two but i dont think you are far out..i reckon lindys shop is just by the mainsonettes to the right of your pic..
you can see the maisonettes better on post 4...

i know moss...ive been down many times and walked the line of brearley st from hospital st to where it finished at well st..bumping into the odd flat or two lol....brearley st ran behind uxbridge st it didnt take the place of it...the houses on the right of brearley st would have been in the open area at the back of uxbridge st...thats roughly of course but like i said i dont think lindys shop was far away from where you say...bascially if you walked out of my back gate at 14 uxbridge st you would be in the part of brearley st that was demolished..

lindy here is an overlay of mikes map...your shop was just a tad down from those shops in the pic that moss posted..as i thought it was more of less where the maisonettes are now or just at the end of the line of shops..it was opposite cadbury house on the corner of uxbridge st and gt hampton row..if you take a google walk you will be able to see it better...i think this is the closest we are going to get with an exact spot...think its near enough anyway and we know for certain it was before geach tower..

moss ive only just noticed the caption on your line of shops pic..its says they are opposite cadbury house when in fact it is holland house you can see...i know this for sure as i had a friend in holland...hope you dont mind me mentioning it..

just to finish lindy..a bit more of a difinative overlay for you...starting from st georges park the 3 blocks of flats are called ryland..holland and cadbury...

Hi Astoness, I have been looking at this thread this afternoon ( Bored With Olympics ) and then it hit me I had a grt grandfather living in No13 Greathampton Row
His name was Thomas Mayo his wife Easter nee Ingram and ther chlldren Thomas & Ivy. would you or any other member have a street map that would show me where that is ???

as in Census april 1911

hi pete go to the pic of the albion works on post 2..that was no 37 gt hampton row so your no 13 will be near there..not far from the constitution hill end of the street...if mikejee spots your request im sure he will be happy to post you a map highlighting your rellies house...

Lyn, I found the photo that you posted at #75 on another site, just before I went to bed last night and was well excited !! I really wished I could stretch it a bit more to see further up the Row !! as you said..getting closer :)
The overlays are great ..thanks again. Mike did give me instructions on how to do it, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at it.
mossg thanks for the great photo!! and also for your thoughts, everything has helped to build a bigger picture for me :)
 
as you say lindy every little helps and places have changed so much over the years its not easy somtimes to get our bearings..i keep saying i need a sat nav just for the back garden lol..by the way i didnt do the overlays im not that technical..its thanks to john knight for those...

pete the minerva is still there..well the building is...been closed as a pub for some years now...

Just had a look on google earth and there is still a pub on the corner of greathamton row it's called the hampton would that be the old Minerva after having a revamp ????

oh well done wessex..i couldnt find one..the beamed effect was done when it became the hampton...i do have a pic of it when it was the minerva vaults but cant post this one because of copywrite...

Map below showing houses in colmore Terrace.Am not sure about a few others , whether they were in terrce or not. It was at the north end on west side just below New john St West
