i may be borrowing some photos off a friend to put on here of the gaity cinema in coleshill street plus other photos of the area.
this thread seems very popular since ger22van (ernie) started it.many thanks for all the contributions made.

Winston. Great pictures. Especially the ones in Avenue Road. I have walked the length of that road thousands of times many years ago. Brings back the memories again just seeing them. Thanks for taking the time, and effort to share them with us. It means a lot for people like me, that dont get down there any more. Thanks, Barry.

I too should like to thank EVERYONE for their postings and photographs on this thread.
As I mentioned before, I am surprised that such a small pub as the "Brit" is still there when other larger pubs have long since disappeared.

You know it's amazing what you get from this site... I now have pic's of the five B'Ham pubs that my Dad who died in 1969 mostley played the piano for the locals in.
The Prince of Wales Dymoke St
The Emily Arms Emily St
The New Inns Gt Lister St
The Old Nelson Rupert St
The 'Brit' Brittania Proctor st
He also played in many more all around Brum such as The Maypole,The Golden Cross, The Black Horse and The Woodman, but the top five were as above. They were the ones we kids would wait outside for him to give us pop and crisps and a few 1/2d pennys pocket money that had been put in the Jar on the "Joanna for blind Les and 'is kid's" along with the threepenny bits, tanners and bob's. Dad never drank while he was playing the piano, just had a couple before closing time. Occasionaly there might be half crowns too if someone had done well on the 'orses at Benny's, or Silkie's. We kids took 'The Jar' home while Dad had his couple and counted it out, Mom got the lions share and we kids got the 1/2d pennys to share between us.
Wouldn't be aloud these days, but there was no benifits as such back then if Ya Dad was out of work. Mine being half blind was often out of work always first to be layed off, even though he could operate a capstion machine better than most sighted men because he out of safty to himself had to be much more careful when doimg the work.

Thanx everyone, my Grankids love looking at all the old pic's on here and the stories I tell to go with them... it's such a different world now.

Ernie

After your comments on the "where is this" thread. I thought I would give the readers of this thread an unofficial try at one. At least you know it is somewhere between Gosta Green and Duddeston. If you don't guess it before tomorrow you will have to wait until next week when I return.

Lloyd,

No sorry, its not Bloomsbury St, but it is very near. I would imagine the bus stop is a temporary one whilst roadworks were ongoing. I have no doubt it would have been used by the 43 service.

I don't think in the normal course of events this road would have been on a bus route. Then I'm no expert.

So another guess is in order.

hi pom.my uncle played the drums and my dad the fiddle, banjo, and mandolin.
there was a piano player that my uncle played with at here there and everywhere, his name was gordon pedigrove or perrygrove we had some times, and as we did,nt live a million miles from each other i was wondering if they could have played together?,he played a lot at the met club. we had some great music nights sing songs and the like before the haunted fish tank appeared. happy days regards derek.

OK second guess - round the corner, Oliver street? I didn't know this area until well after the Parkway was built through it.

Hello All,

I have been going through this thread and the pictures and so much has come back to me from my childhood. The cobble streets , Devon Street, Cato Street, other not sure of all the names. Catching the bus at Saltley Gate when the old toilets used to be there. Was there a school in Devon Street? seem to recall walking past old fashioned black railings at the front of what seemed to be a playground and I even think that there was a sweet shop in Devon Street. On some special days we would get the train from Duddeston into Birmingham.

Does anyone remember a goods train being derailed or some kind of accident at the bottom of Duddeston Mill Road and people having to be evacuated??? Think this would of been in the 60/s or 70/s. When I was younger used to deliver the abc weekly in the general area oh and how was it like a maze going around those houses.

Lloyd I'll have to tell you, Its the Bloomsbury Institute in Fowler St. Fowler St ran from Bloomsbury St to Goodrick St, which in turn ran down to Saltley Rd.

As I said it was probably a temporary diversion whilst the altered the bottom end of Bloomsbury St

Thanks Bob Can't remember that Pub in my travels around that area, then I never drank and don't drink now, but I had enough practice in my time.
