Brummie Holidays & Days out on Old Postcard .....

Bath is lovely - we stayed there for a short break a few years back. Superb place.

I have always wanted to visit Bath -maybe this will be the year! Has a new shopping centre opened there recently?
Polly

Yes, Polly, the new shopping centre has replaced the horrible 1960's development in Southgate Street, bigger and better and fits in really well with the Georgian buildings now. Sad though is the new modern bus station near the river that spoils the landscape there now, when will they ever learn - and to add insult to injury the council and bus company have decided it is too small and causes traffic congestion! If you haven't been before and visiting by car, parking is a bit expensive, but don't let that put you off - as Bernie says, it's a lovely place. (There are some park and ride car parks on the outskirts with buses to and from the centre, so that's a another option).

Also Polly, they have the best located rugby ground in the country...there, you really needed to know that.

I always used to tranfixed by my mates after the summer holidays to hear about the sea and adventures, we were too poor to go I did'nt even see the sea till I was 15yrs old, my dad tryed his best took us out for days by coach but it was'nt the same, I used to read all the secret seven books and imagine I would have adventures like that one day. I always wanted to visit Butlins it always seemed to be the hight of luxury, all those rides and pools and food "free"!!.

Seen here in the 1960's, it's an easy day out from Brum to Bourton on the Water. All the vehicles seen in this view were made in England as well!

....and now for the poor mans sea cruise! A holiday in Swanage was not complete without a 10 minute sea cruise by taking your car or catching the Hants and Dorset bus to Poole via the Sandbanks Ferry crossing the mouth of Poole Harbour. In summer long queues of cars built up waiting to board the ferry but the buses had priority so were the best option for a day out. In the opposite direction many made the "cruise" by coming to it from nearby Bournemouth. In this 1970's view a single decker can just be seen on the ferry but in summer nowadays open top double deckers make the journey.

Lovely views Polly and by coincidence back in the 1970's my mum worked in the Card Shop seen in the lower left picture on the Bath multiview card. Last time I was down earlier this summer the shop had changed use and sadly there were less flowers around.

Polly, from the style of caravans, the car, shop and the people, I would say 1960's. This card would look good over on the Birmingham-on-Sea thread as well if you fancy posting it there.

Mike - how strange that I should find a postcard of the shop where your mum worked! What date do you think this was taken - do you think she was in there at the time this was taken?
Shame there are now less flowers - it looks really pretty - I still haven't got to Bath yet!
Polly

Polly, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a 1970's view and mum was in the shop. She was very proud of all the flowers and the compliments she heard off customers and tourists. Bath always enters the Britain in Bloom every year and have won it a few times. Regards Cheddar, was there last Saturday and it's had a bit of a boost with most shops in the Gorge occupied and trading. For a while it was quite depessing as shops were closing down, but now it is well worth a visit and the fish and chip restaurant by Fortes ice cream parlour up the Gorge on the left is superb or for a really nice English restaurant try the 'Eidelweiss' next to the river bridge at the foot of the Gorge. I say English cos you might think it was Austrian

Glad to hear Cheddar is doing well - sounds as if there are some nice places to eat - I shall make a note of them for when I visit.
I thought the Bath one might of been taken in the 70's - have you seen it before?

I shall put the postcard on the other thread.
Polly

Right up to date is this multiview sent this month from Tenby.
