Prefabs

Went by this morning and it was quite quiet. Spotted some builders on a tea break so parked and went and spoke to them.
The aim is to finish by end of October or early November. Some, to be occupied by ordinary people (if I can put it like that) are already finished - not sure if that is rent or sale (I would think rent).
The one to be opened as a museum isn't ready yet - that will be more true to the original fitments - ie a bath not a shower (I gather the others now have showers fitted}. All will be fully insulated and meet modern safety standards, All front gardens are grassed.
He let me peep through the windows of a finished one - might pop back on Sunday and see if I can sneak a look in the other windows and at the back.
Anyway pics - interior views taken through glass with as little reflection as I could get. The bedroom is the front right window as you look at the prefab. The window seen through the door is the kitchen window through which I took the kitchen pictures.
Thanks for the update.

This project is an interesting example of how to bring a group of historic buildings back to their original use. We have lots of examples of refurbishment of old buildings into other uses, but for obvious reasons, not back to their original purpose. In this case, it looks very much like a 'keep it simple' approach, while bringing the houses up to modern required standards. Hopefully, the new residents enjoy the prefabs as much as other occupants before them.

Thanks for keeping us updated Janice, and maybe you'll get a nice cuppa on your next visit!
They were ahead of their time when they were first built a must see when they are finished.

Jan, from a distance, why would they be rented and not sold?

I’m not sure what the final plans are for these prefabs but on the consultation, I spoke to the Historic Building Trust and suggested they keep one in original condition and open it as a museum. There would they need to be some staffing costs that could be covered by rental income as a revenue stream from the others. I recall there were about 14 give or take a couple. As the existing prefabs would not meet the required insulation and energy efficiency levels then as listed building, some renovation works could be funded by grants.

UK rental is quite high at the moment too.

Drove by in the week and spotted a new sign. Stopped (in the rain) to try to get a photo but board is on an angle and a bit tall for me to get a good view. However I decided this was bettter than nothing. Will try again with camera when it is dry.

In this Historic England blog link, several phrases are used to describe them:
temporary prefabs, temporary prefabricated buildings, prefabricated bungalows and temporary bungalows. One photo shows an information board describing them simply as temporary housing (from the Temporary Housing Scheme I guess). This term would also apply to prefabricated houses with more than one strorey of course. Another interesting phrase I've seen is, where there are many prefab bungalows together, it being called a prefab colony.

Insightful article particularly the part about prefabricated houses(off topic), a larger and larger number of parts in US homes and I’m sure elsewhere are prefabricated. The quality is better and costs are lower!

The actual word Bungalow comes from the Indian continent..

The word "bungalow" comes from the Hindi word banglā, which means "of Bengal". The term was first recorded in English between 1670 and 1680.
In India, a bungalow is a single-story house that is usually thatched or tiled and surrounded by a veranda.
