we are now using a backup solution

where is this street/road

and taken on the opposite side phil. yes i see the same decor on the 2 floors of your pic. if you look on my pic have you noticed how the houses on the right all have the door steps. it seems like one side of the road is totally different from the other. im just off to zoom in and try and compere the pavements and road. wales.

Wales i reckon Lloyd is correct i can remeber the houses with that type of brickwork as you came down from the Heathfield Tavern

Mossy

thanks mossy. not knowing me way round pubs lol i take it the heathfield tavern was close by. so far its looking like it could be heath st then. wales.

Lioyd, Y= Yorkshire, G= issue office, = YGB 667, this is from Wikipedia, search for local council car reg numbers, you should get an A to Y list: There are a lot of houses in Leeds with 3 storys. Len.

Where do you get that from, Len? My reference shows Glasgow as having CS,DS,GA,GB,GD,GE,GG,HS,NS,OS,SB,SD,SJ,SM,SU,SW,US and YS; Whilst Leeds had BT,DN,NW,UA,UB,UG,UM, VY,WR,WT,WU,WW,WX,WY and YG.
I know some were moved around in the 70s, but at the time of this picture I think GB was a Glasgow mark.
Lloyd, the first letter = the district so Glasgow first letter =S, second letter is G, which = SGB 667, not YGB 667. Len.

Len
I'm not sure that you're right in there being a lot of 3 -storey houses in leeds Maybe in the centre and individually, but not very long roads with straight terraces like in the photo. I stand to be corrected, but can't find any like that on Leodis (historic picture leeds database), though could only search for housing an period taken. "3 -storey" didn't register

Mike

mikejee, I searched Leeds council local history, i did`nt use Leopodis but found some 3 story houses in the council website. Len.

hi all. this is great the way you are trying to solve this puzzle. i may ask my friend if they keep a note of where photos that are donated to the archives come from. i doubt if they do but it may help. wales.

Found that page, Len, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_United_Kingdom
which describes accurately at the start the present system, introduced in 2001.
For the age of this photo, however, the earlier system which uses three letters and three numbers, introduced 1932, was in force. Scroll down that page a bit and it says :1932 to 1963
The second paragraph states:
The three-letter scheme preserved the area letter codes as the second pair of letters in the set of three.
Similarly the mini has an HA plate, from Smethwick, as did most Midland Red buses - HA, AHA, BHA, CHA etc, issued in that of order, originally with the number following, but later in front of the letters.

Lloyd

the HA plate on the mini if that designates Smethwick that would tie in with a Winson Green road.

Phil.

It's certainly a local mark, but not proof. The Morris has driven from Glasgow...or has the Mini driven up there...or is it a town en route where they passed??
I'd still put a quid on Heath Street myself, actually. More from the architecture and Birmingham-style street lights.

Lloyd, i noticed in the Leeds photos they had the same street lights or very similar to those in the photo. Len.

That doesn't surprise me - many towns & cities bought similar equipment post-war. Earlier street furniture was often more specialist, though.

I fear that this photo, will blow my theory out of the water. I assumed that the mystery photo had been taken from outside the Heath St Tavern. This cannot be so, as obviously the buildings on that side of the road were only 2 storey constructions.

I am still convinced that it is in the Winson Green area.

Phil

hi phil. what a mystery this one is. maybe its not heath street but i have studied my orgininal pic and would you agree that athough the one side is definately 3 high the other is only 2. wales.

Wales

you are right I found the picture of the Tavern and had not checked with the original, I just assumed the houses were 3 storey on both sides. The other flaw is of course that the latest photo shows a shop next to the Heath St Tavern.

Phil

just found this while trawling or is it surfing net lol. possabilities maybe. its taken on the corner of winson green road and heath st. what do you all think. wales.

its looking good. found out that gkn was in heath st. maybe the smoke and assembly rooms sign may have been their social club. just a thought. wales.

Wales, I think it is unlikely that a social club would have signs for Smoke Rooms and Assembly Rooms in the street, I would say they belonged to a pub but I don't know Heath Street very well.

Wales you last photo you have posted, its a possibility because there was a pub on the other corner, the Shakespeare I think. (I'm looking for a photo) I have marked the location of your photo with an X.

I still think there is a chance of it being at one of the locations I have marked 1 & 2. I have also posted the full Kelly's listing for Heath St.

thanks for that phil. so the road running along the bottom of my pic would be winson green road. plenty of shops there i would think hence so many people walking down what we think to be heath street. i wonder phil is it poss to get a map of heath st showing the houses and pubs like we may be able to work out if there was a pub where we see the sign at the top right. just another idea (and i dont get to many of them) lyn

I agree with lloyd (the inn he mentions is incidentally the Shakespeare), for two reasons. I've printed out Heath road from the 1890 survey on a large scale, and joined the bits. Its about 2 foot long on that scale. If you look down it from the position of the Shakespeare. as if you were at that point there is a "bulge" in the buildings on the right hand side of the street just past the junction with Dudley road, just like appears on the photograph in the distance. There is no other position (other than just behind or forward of this) that gives a similar bulge, as the road itself is remarkably straight. Therefore, if it is Heath st, it must be taken from that position approximately. The sign would seem to agree .
Also If you magnify the picture and count the number of houses on the left that have the characteristic coloured lines of bricks, I make it about 30 houses before the lines of bricks stop. On the map there are 36 identical houses marked from the junction before slightly smaller houses start. this is about rigfht allowing for those that wont show in the photograph. It still might not be Heath St though. We need a picture of the Shakespeare
