Pub Quiz League

I only have to make one adjustment to the league table this morning as there was only one correct answer for yesterday's interior photograph. This is a public-house I have used when seeing a performance at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. The Prince of Wales is just around the corner in Cambridge Street. Well done to Guyarab who gains a point and moves into 2nd place in the league table .....

Yippee, it is time for the Midweek Map Muddle, an element of the Pub Quiz League that is seemingly very popular with those who like to have a rummage through archive material to find the answer to my age-old question of "Name the pub?" I will not date the plan as it may be misleading but I will reveal some detail about it tomorrow.

PLEASE send your answer via PM message rather than posting on this page as it will spoil it for everyone else. Deadline for submissions is TONIGHT Wednesday 22.00hrs 3rd June. Good luck!

Aaahhh  been in the P of W a couple of times, but not since the 70's!
It was a real old fashioned place then - there was a little music room in the back, wooden floor, very basic.
Looks like it's gone upmarket since then!!

The Midweek Map Muddle was not solved this week. The extract, which I think is featured on a BHF thread, was the 1946 Plan for the Inner Ring Road by Herbert J. Manzoni, the City Engineer & Surveyor. Here is the section used for the Muddle :

So, the pub was in Jennens Row. I made sure that the arrow was not pointing at the corner of Chapel Street as this was the site of the prominent Crown and Anchor, though the building was once the George. knobbydave was not far off the mark when submitting the Crown and Anchor. Curly was also in the right area but went for another pub. The correct answer is the Chapel Tavern which was next to the aforementioned Crown and Anchor. Sadly, as Guyarab has found before, there are no half marks for being close! What a tough quizmaster! So the league remains the same ....

Not too many points have been gained this week and the trend continued yesterday as Astoness was the only person to identify the Bull's Head on Pritchett Street. With knobbydave chasing her for 4th place, she gains a valuable point to move up to 17 points .....

Lots of correct answers to yesterday's image of the Bull's Head on St. Mary's Row at Moseley. I see that it is trading as the Cuban Embassy these days! This is just ridiculous. I love Cuban music and, in addition to seeing the Buena Vista Social Club at the Town Hall, I danced with La Vieja Trova Santiaguera at the Sounds in the Round in Cannon Hill Park. However, I do not want a Birmingham pub with a historic name changed to the Cuban Embassy for a few years until it will be more trendy to have a Brazilian name. Or whatever. The same thing happened in Broad Street where many venues were named after various parts of the world almost as if it was shameful to reference the city in which they made money. But enough of my ranting .....

Lots of correct entries for yesterday's photograph of the Lord Clifden on Great Hampton Street. Guyarab tells me that it has changed hands and they have dropped the 'Lord' from the name. Just looked on Google pics and I notice there is a transmitter on a small inn sign - perhaps a reference to the Marconi station in County Galway closed in 1922 following its damage during the Irish Civil War ... all a bit odd?

Well done to Elmo and Guyarab who identified yesterday's photograph of the British Oak at Stirchley. At the top-left of the photograph one can see the 'new' British Oak being constructed and soon the old one, purchased when M&B took over Cheshire's Brewery, would be demolished.

Well done to allanbrum who moves up the league table as he was the only one to identify yesterday's photograph. IMPORTANT UPDATE to league table. For some reason I missed an e-mail message at 19.42hrs last night from Guyarab who also identified The Rainbow. So, I have updated the league table which now has a tie for 1st place!

Curly was almost an exclusive single entry for yesterday's Stinker but a late entry from Guyarab was also a correct identification of the Tilt Hammer on Alum Rock Road. There is a thread on BHF for this pub in which Astonian recalled it being one of the roughest pubs in Brum. The result of yesterday's entries is that Elmo has been toppled from the top of the table, a position he has held for ages ....

"Interesting, very interesting" as Barry Davies once said. I speak of the outcome of yesterday's image which seems to have stumped lots of people. There were clues ... it was an Ansell's house which narrowed it down a fair bit. The scene is rural in character so somewhere out of the city?? And a church spire in the distance. The latter was a reference perhaps to Erdington Abbey as the inn sign stood outside the Lad In The Lane. Well done to A. Sparks and Curly who cracked it. A. Sparks moves up a place whilst Curly has closed the gap to second place - "Interesting, very interesting."

Well, despite zillions of people flocking to the shops, or one shop in particular, the pub quiz continues. We are supposedly still in lockdown, though many seem to be flouting the rules to one degree or another. I am still furloughed and have stayed at home. I have plenty of work in my garden and in doing that I have not mixed with people. Anyway, I will keep posting images until the all-clear is announced ....

The answer to yesterday's tavern check question was the Prince of Wales, one of the lesser-known beer houses on Summer Lane. A couple of doors away from the Vine Inn, the boozer was located on the eastern side of Summer Lane between New John Street West and Theodore Street. Kidderminster-born Walter Whittaker kept the tavern with his wife Emma. A few members said that they had never heard of this beer house so I am glad to see that the pub quiz is helping to extend the knowledge of Birmingham's pubs in some small way. Some years ago I drew a map of this thoroughfare so this seems a good time to post it :
