When i was driving in the Aston/Summer lane area, years ago.
I think it was round Bracebridge st or Miller st, the boss of a company i was delivering had the reg LOV 410P on a Armstrong Sidley.....dereklcg

I cant remember the numbers but I had an escort Mk1 ???DAD sold it and bought a Marina ???MOM.
Still see ALB10N about regulary when delivering around West Brom / Oldbury /Smethwick area.
ABC 123 was on a blue Jag Mk2 owned by a chap in Wylde Green but that was back in late 60's early 70's. Don't know what happened to it after that.

hi guys
does anybody know when the first year of registration on cars came into force made law or what was the first vechial
model to be registered
many thanks astonian ;;

Astonian compliments wiki The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on to the Government's vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.:)also this may be worth a look https://knol.google.com/k/rick-cadg...e-uk/1pveq2s52mvz2/2#The_Original_System(3A):)

ABC 123 has been on a cuople of humble Ford Fiestas in last 5 years

I remember my first car was a mini registration 550 cox and I paid a fiver for it. My dad and I used Isopon to put the sub frame back together to pass the MOT

In the early to mid-1960s, my father owned a Riley 4/72 with the registration number 999 KOP. Pity the 'K' wasn't a 'C' - the number plate would have been worth thousands of pounds. Dad bought it from the much-mentioned and often photographed Atlas Garage on the Garrison Lane/Cattell Road junction so I guess it had had a previous owner as I seem to remember that the Atlas was a Ford distributor. db84124

My father owned BOM 1 on a Standard 9. My brother owned TOK 1 on a Consul, My other brother owned 2 HOP on a Stag which he claimed stood for " to hard on petrol " I have owned 31 KM VW, 70 COX Humber, 333 JON Cortina, CON1C Minivan, TON 17 Anglia, 6 JOC Pontiac, TR 31 Jaguar. I wonder where they are today if they still exist.

i remember my dad had 2 cars HOH 80 and DLC 735.we were very young then .he progressed to better and newer cars but those 2 nos stayed in my head for some reason.

For my 50th birthday (several years ago) my wife purchased a relatively old personalised number plate for me. The company that she purchased it from has since contacted her on two occasions offering to buy back the plate for almost three times the original cost.

Forget shares, forget property - number plates seem to be the best investment at the moment?
Hello just saw your post! seems you are researching the surname Acton, this was my wifes surname. Please contact me for more details, Tom:rolleyes:

just going through some threads on cars and reminded of two old regisration marks of cars I owned one was 216 R W on a wolseley 1500 which I bought from a fitter in Ansells boiler house and the other again a 1500 was 9219 U E cant remember where that one came from but the reg nos stayed with me both cars I was the last owner of as they both went to scrap:( What would them nos be worth now Eh:)

I am restoring a Turner 950S - built at Pendesford Aerodrome in 1958. The registration number is WOL 846 - can anyone provide me with any information on the history of this individual vehicle? Is WOL a Wolverhampton plate? The DVLA have "lost" all the records covering this period!

WOL was a Birmingham authority plate issued between June 1958 and January 1959 (which is when the next mark, XOL, started). I understand that when DVLA took over and centralised index mark issue, all 'void' records (vehicles no longer being taxed) were dumped from the Birmingham office, the libraries department didn't want them as they would take up too much storage space.

Hi Michael,

WOL 846 is a Birmingham plate from around 1957-58.

Kind regards

Dave

I read that registration A1 belonged initially Lord Brabazon Eric

There is no record of this- he did own FLY1 -later owned by Sir Freddie Laker

"A 1 is widely thought to have been the first number plate issued in Britain.
The ‘Car Illustrated’ dated 23 December 1903 said, “There has been some amount of competition for the securing of the number plate A 1 and this has been acquired by Earl Russell for his Napier car.
A Mr. L. H. Oliver of Edgware claims the distinction of personally handing the certificate for A 1 over to Earl Russell”.

The chairman of London County Council later held A 1 for a short period of time. George V. Petty bought the car with the number on in 1907, transferring it to several vehicles over the years. Mr. Petty died in 1950, bequeathing the car and the plate to Trevor T. Laker. It is thought that this is probably the first time that a registration number had been mentioned in a will. The specific detail in the will requested that Mr. Laker use the number until his death when it should be sold and the proceeds donated to a dogs’ charity. He was no doubt the envy of all car drivers. He turned down many generous offers, but always refused to sell. When he became an old man he finally sold A 1 to Dunlop Holdings Ltd, on the understanding that they would not receive the number until his death, and that £2,500 be donated to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Mr. Laker died in 1970."

Only numbers I can remember were DRW 197 and DOC 945 - DRW was a Wolsley and DOC was a Morrie Minor, cant remember the number of the Mini Cooper or the E type. My original Merc was on German plates till I shipped it out here in 1968 - now all our cars here have personalised plates and are moved from one car to the next - its the only way I can remember them and know which Merc is which why must they all be white!!!

Dyan in NZ

Most MB's in the UK are silver, white quite rare except for wedding cars. Had my silver C180 estate for 3 years now, most reliable car i have owned.

My brother had the reg OOA1R I wonder what that would be worth now?
