I have been researching my great grandfather who was a bit of an enigma but through the joys of army records confirmed him on the 1912 qualify electorial register as being the owner of two properties:
369 Coventry Road and 704 Stratford Road (where he also lived)
I have looked up the modern day properties and whilst 369 has been demolished both are in main shopping centre's and the stratford road property is currently a restaurant although appears to have been a solicitors up until this year. I can not find my great grandfather on the 1911 census as I can not find these addresses so wondered if they were indeed shops at that time.
Is there anyway I can find this out. The added complication is that he seems to be using two names. He was born William Williams but from 1881 he uses the name William Nott (his mothers maiden name) and this is the name that appears on his childrens birth certificates. He was not married to the childrens mother she was his uncles widow but married a lady called Anne Crane who died around 1900.

His Son Bert may be working for him at some point as he is stated as an apprentice at one of the addresses. The army record of him being in Coventry road is dated 1902 so he is definatly there from 1902 -1912.
