Were they Shops in 1900-1912?? Coventry & Stratford Road

 Ok this is a tad confusing but will make it as simple as I can ;)

I have been researching my great grandfather who was a bit of an enigma but through the joys of army records confirmed him on the 1912 qualify electorial register as being the owner of two properties:

369 Coventry Road and 704 Stratford Road (where he also lived)

I have looked up the modern day properties and whilst 369 has been demolished both are in main shopping centre's and the stratford road property is currently a restaurant although appears to have been a solicitors up until this year. I can not find my great grandfather on the 1911 census as I can not find these addresses so wondered if they were indeed shops at that time.

Is there anyway I can find this out. The added complication is that he seems to be using two names. He was born William Williams but from 1881 he uses the name William Nott (his mothers maiden name) and this is the name that appears on his childrens birth certificates. He was not married to the childrens mother she was his uncles widow but married a lady called Anne Crane who died around 1900.

His Son Bert may be working for him at some point as he is stated as an apprentice at one of the addresses. The army record of him being in Coventry road is dated 1902 so he is definatly there from 1902 -1912.

According to the 1903 Kelly's trade Directory (which would be the 1912 record) 369 Coventry Rd was Alfred R Ball (Draper) and 704 Stratford Rd was William Nott (Picture Framer).

In the 1903 Edition of Kelly's the 1902 Record was, 369 Coventry Rd William Nott (picture framer) and 704 Stratford Rd Fredrick Fielder (glass & china dealer).

Phil

Thanks PMC but I am a little confused by your reply? Was William Trading jointly at both addresses as a picture framer?

Thank you for checking that for me :)

ginger_cat,

Sorry but I have a habit of making myself hard to understand. What it looks like is sometime between 1902 and 1912 William ceased to trade at Coventry Rd and he moved his business to Stratford Rd and commenced trading there.

Phil

Ah ok, that makes sense :D

I think he must have owned coventry road after he ceased trading though as it has him as owner of Stratford Road but has Coventry road address as a sub.

His address in 1902 is Coventry Road but in 1912 its Stratford road so that all make perfect sense.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated!

In the1911 census Albert Edward Finley is in Handsworth with a daughter age 2 born Sparkhill and a son 11 months born Handsworth. (wife was born Camp Hill) so he is not at 704 Stratford Rd

if your Bert age 17 is with his parents William & Elizabeth at 99 Lidsam St in 1901 then William Nott and Jane Elizabeth are at 12 Gladys Rd Hay Mills in 1911. The wife born in ? Ross in both

He isnt on the 1901 census with his mother Louisa so that could be him with William and his new wife? Its all a bit complex lol.

Thanks for checking stratford road for me!

In the 1911 census enumerators book 704 Stratford Rd, Sparkhill,Solihull is un-inhabited.

Oh that helps with dates then, so must have been late 1911 early 1912 that William moved into stratford Road. As its definatly stated as his main address in the 1912 voters roll records.

Not sure who Alfred the hardware maker is must have been the previous owner.

Thank you again for checking that for me :)
