Thanks.hi mark i very much doubt it as cadburys is a chocolate factory and as far as i know nothing to do with metal works...also if he was a managing director i think that would mean he owned the metal works factory.
lyn
that is true mark but not all houses in bournville were owned by cadburys...well thats as far i know anyway..maybe a bit more research is needed just as an aside in the 1940 kellys directory he is listed at 928 bristol road selly oak..also on the 39 eve of war register living with him is a edward williams occupation for him is metal press shop formanThanks.
I thought that when they developed Cadbury/Bournville, that you had to work there to live in their housing scheme?
Even chocolate factories have machines for making the chocolate, as well as the tins to put the chocolates in.
The first date for Smith at T&W on a patent is 1935.
The first date for Smith at Bristol Road on a patent is 1944.
yes i see that now jan..in that case there must be 2 charles donald smiths born in 1893 unless there is an error on one of those recordsDates of birth on death record and 1939 don't match. Both say 18th and 1893 but one is Sept and one March..
ThanksHere is something to work on from the Coleshill Chronicle of March 1910..
Janice, is there a confirmed date of death anywhere? With his being 76, if he died after March might shed some light.Dates of birth on death record and 1939 don't match. Both say 18th and 1893 but one is Sept and one March..
So if his Birthday was March, he would have been 77 on his death, wouldn't it ?Death on probate is 2 May 1970
Possibly. I would expect the date and month to have been right but the year could be wrong. So if his Birthday was March, he would have been 77 on his death, wouldn't it ?
Those “unofficial” exhaust jobs were known as “foreigners” to those working in the shop. It was remarkable how many foreigners there were! Not all houses in Bournville were occupied by Cadbury workers. Up till around 1970s., the firm had considerable metal-working expertise. I was aware of a fairly senior manager having a new stainless steel exhaust made for him in the workshops (unofficially) and they did manufacture a considerable amount of metal components when needed. Indeed in WW2 the factory manufactured a number of metal items for the war effort, such as aircraft fuel tanks. However I am sure that part of the organisation did not have a person described as a managing director.
The patent submitted December 1934 is a Arthur Barnard Osborne, and then CD Smith on the patent submitted January 1935.I don’t think it would be true to say that CD Smith owned the company T&W from 1925 to around 1954. The 1939 electoral register shows him living at 215 Beaumont Road and being Managing Director of a metal works, his date of birth 93 suggest he is our man.
The 1939 patent shows his name along with T&W and would be consistent with an MD. The 1927 patent shows a William Henry Morris who could have been the MD at that time.
Managing Director in a UK limited company is the senior executive appointed by the board. They may also be a shareholder, but the title itself doesn’t indicate ownership, although he could be a sizeable shareholder.
thanks jan exactly what i thoughtI am convinced the person on the 1939 reg born in Mar and the person dying in 1970 with birth month sep are the same person and one of those entries is incorrect.

When Companies house gets back to me, I'll know more about T&W (1925), along with British Safety Stove.
He's also named on two Sidney Flaval patents, as Inventor, and on one with Henry Alfred Palmer of Leamington SpaCD Smith appears on 57 patents along with T&W ltd and T&W (1925) Ltd., the earliest I can see is 1935.
