There is something in the sky below the lower bough if the tree on the left. Might be aircraft or a blemished photo. :D However the reason I presumed he overhead was there was because the support poles looked like they were also there.

It's a ladies day out at the Manor Arms on the corner of Cato Street and Duddeston Mill Road. Wearing their best hats they pose for a photo and the pub landlord looks dapper with his bow tie and expandable arm bands for his shirt sleeves.

Another case of so called progress to the detriment of the area,Catco St and Duddeson Mill Rd.
Look at that rubbish, why doesn't the council pick up litter anymore. I'm sure they get more in rates from us now as a percentage of income! but they provided a better service in the olden days. Mind people had more of a civic pride in the past. Grrrrrrrrr :mad:
 
Photographer not much help with date, as he was at 108 Bloomsbury st as picture framemaker in 1921 & 1923 and photographer 1932 till at least 1940

The image I posted was for sale in the postcard section of eBay and the Ellis watermark had presumably been removed by the seller.
 
Notice all Women wore hats (#399) and men boasted moustaches (#384), how times change, although beards seem more common nowadays than they used to. Eric
 
The same pub, looking like it did not long before demolition if I remember correctly though it was a pub I never used.

Not sure if it is the same person but Frank Ellis is listed in 1912 Kelly's at 108 and 243 Bloomsbury Street as a Picture frame Maker. In 1921 he is only listed at 108.

A sad 'Then and Now' ...
On 27th July 1942 the last significant air raid on Birmingham occurred when 60 bombers attacked the city. During the raid a semi-detached house at 155/157 Gillott Road received a direct hit killing a married couple living at 157. See info from 'Barra' below. The house next door (No 153) with the decorative corner brickwork lost roof-tiles and windows but remained standing. The house across the road received blast damage.

I wonder what the posts outside the butchery (cold meats?) shop protected. The concreted base must have had regular use.

A leafy College Road in Moseley. All the houses in this photo survive today including the one just visible through the trees.

A pity some gardens , even if the were small, have gone from the houses on the right of the photo. It cheapens the appearance of the street.
