Sutton Park History

This little railway is now at Cleethorpes. We went to the Lincolnshire Wolds last year and went to have a look but it was out of season so it was closed.
 
Does anyone remember when it was on fire in the 70s.We lived by the Buccaneer in Streetly and had to have the windows closed all the time because of the smoke and ash.It was sweltering.

In the very hot summer of 1976 I had driven into the park with my young son. Suddenly the heathland near Banners Gate burst into flames with thick smoke everywhere. We tried to leave by Banners Gate but the smoke and flames stopped us getting through and we were turned round by the police and fire people and told to leave immediately via Boldmere Gate.

What a great image! The ladies in the picture all appear to be members of the WRVS who were much involved in the eating arrangements. (My mother was one of them although I don't see her in this picture). The blokes all seem to have official boiler suits and berets too. I wonder what Service they belonged to.

My mother was in the WVS food Flying Squad and they did the hospital catering at the World Jamboree Sutton Coldfield in 1947. (I don’t see my mother either)

I do apologize but l thought the the Jamboree was in August 1957 as l was there..Joe 90
 
There must have been other smaller Jamborees at Sutton besides the 1957 9th. World one. I went to one in the later 1940's, probably 1947. It would not have been the 1957 one as by this time I had been in the RAF for two years or so.
 
Kix, re: your drone flight. Very interesting, but I do hope you kept below the now-required maximum altidude of 400 ft, and that you're a member of, and insured with, the British Model Flying Association. Just asking.....

Was therein the summer but usually go to little Brace bridge pool to catch a glimpse of the wild ponies and this is what we saw!!. Felt very privileged and humble when we sat and watched them walk by. Counted just over forty then lost count. I am sure the whole herd turned up on that hot day to both bathe and drink.

They are planning to build a housing estate on some of the fields on the video opposite Doe Bank park.
 
In 1954 we raced our bloody bikes in Sutton Park. This photo shows that, I am in pack hanging on as a team mate Fred Hopkins gives it a go at the front. Very competitive racing those days I was 21 could not race on the open roads due to Police rules Well file to big sorry

We were not with a club, three or four of us were given the OK to keep out of the way of you experts and ride as individuals, but we were not really good enough and the early starts were to much for us so after three or four sessions of dropping out halfway through we retired.

I used to cycle for leisure not sport, racing around and seeing nothing always seemed to be a daft idea.

From when I was about thirteen I'd get on my bike on Sunday morning and take off to Stratford, Evesham, Worcester etc. or go the other way up to Lichfield, Tamworth, Derby, even Stoke on Trent and Nottingham.
