Hi Dave: Thanks for posting those photos of the snow. You would have a lovely ride down that hill on your toboggan! Everything looks different with the snow.

Jenny - Thanks also from me for that link. I went on some of those rides and also on the miniature railway.

Thanks jenny it was a great link and very entertaining reading it through and the 1940's photo's although it had'nt changed much in the late 50's.

I.m sure somoen will have already mentioned this, but I remember watching the RAC rally flying over - and off - the roads through the park, but can't remember where in the park it was - we used to go in Banners Gate, I think, but can't place anywhere then, though I do think they went through a ford? Must be older age creeping up lol

Same area of the pool, with pic taken from the far end, must have been colder in the 1950s, or less movement.

Nice photos keith, I recognise some of the skaters in them.
I can remember skating on the pool around Christmas in 1961, not a particularly cold winter, the ice was all of 2" thick so it was unsafe but if you kept moving it held.
Later in 1962/63 the ice on some pools was 3' thick.
Perhaps the Health and Safety put antifreeze in the water these days...or the large number of wildfowl stop ice forming.

I like the then & now Dave ,We skated on WYNDLEY due to it being out side the park & the wardens could not tell us to get off, the Police would have to deal with us instead :0)) & they always had other things to do in that bad weather :0))
The cafe always had a ladder to hand if any one went through the ice & a welcome cupa + that real log fire.
Ho those were the days, we had some fun back then, a Phil?

That's a lovely picture of Keeper's pool John. I went swimming there often in the 60's the picture is taken from a different side to the usuall ones very nice. Brings back happy summer days.

I have wonderful memories of the park nan used to live in Sutton so a walk to the park for a picnic was a treat. We used to walk up to Wyndley I think, then go to watch the swimmers at the lido and walk down the hill to the stream, where we paddled. Looking now I wonder how I walked that far could have only been 6 or so. We took our children with my mom about 10 years ago and have pics of mom paddling!!The kids were amazed but really enjoyed it. These are more pics I must post for you all, need to get on our main computer as my laptop hasn't got a printer/scanner yet!!

Hi Sistersue, we used to go to Sutton Park in the early 50s and it was at a time when portable radios were starting to appear and the neighbour who took with with her son carried it. It was cream and the size and weight of it was unbelievable at the time and I now wonder how on earth did she carry it. We also went paddling but there must have been some kind of little weirs in the pool which I went to step up and cut the front of my ankle, which resulted in a stitch needing to put in. We had to go to the hospital by bus to get it done. I still have the scar today to remind me.

I remember the paddling stream very well. It was quite near to Keepers Pool built specifically for paddling and as you say it was tiered like little water falls. I went often and sometimes it got really busy. There were little bridges over it as well....oh happy days!

Perhaps someone will correct me here, but was it the 29A bus that took you to Kingstanding Circle and your walked from there, or not. I remember it being quite a lengthy walk.
