Re: suttonpark

the nearest gate i know is by the road that come down from kingstanding and that's by walsall is it called ruff road or something like that iv only been back once in the last 40 years sorry

It is actually Rough Road, leading to Banners Gate Road, across Chester Road and you are at Banners Gate.

I am less than half way through these posts and will continue to trawl through them.
I am actually very intrigued to discover (it's like an Agatha Christy novel) why such an erudite, informed and obviously keen historian and poster (Cromwell),has been banned. What could he possibly have done to be given the boot?
It's a mystery.!!!!!!

Re: Rac Rally

still got some film of it will have a look and see if I can get some still images off it

I remember the rally well, they entered through Banners gate which was opposite my house,my friend and I spoke to Jimmy Saville( he was a front seat passenger) in one of the rally cars.

Nice old postcard of the Banners Gate Entrance

This is a lovely old house,my friend lived in it in the 70's her husband worked for the parks dept.It was recently up for sale for mega bucks so has been sold privately.
I have spent many hours in this property.

Thread 319 of myself in the park as a child. Just been back there and took some photo's and hope they can be put on the computer. The batteries were playing up so fingers crossed. Took our doggy bag but i don't think anyone else did. Disgusting. Jean.

This is a photo taken in Sutton Park yesterday. The photo on a previous thread was taken almost in the same place. That one was approximately 57 years ago.

Nice pictures Jean, Wev'e not been to that area of the Park for some time now, must put it on our list of things to do. Goffy

Its a fantastic Park Mossy and I used to go o a Sunday morning to watch people fly there aeroplanes and of course we used to feed the ducks. I used to take the children to collet leaves and twigs to make collages and we used to play whats the time mr wolf. Great memories and lots of fun we all had. I think you have to pay to get in on Sunday £1.00 entrance fee ( is this true )

Linda not sure we only go mid week. When I took my horse in [many years ago] it was 2 shillings if you didn't live in the borough of Sutton Coldfield. Of course it now forms part of Birmingham much to the residents displeasure [and thats most of Pete's family]. Going again when we get a dry day as the batteries failed on the camera. Serve him indoors right should have taken my old one not his posh one. Jean.

Lovely photo's Baron the first two looked more like Big Bracebridge than Blackroot. The beach area, I spent many summers swimmimg there oh the lovely carefree memories. Perhaps we could organise a walk from the forum?

Lovely photo's Baron used to ride Misty there most weekends while Pete was fishing. Wh held moms 75th at Bobby Browns is it still open. If it stays dry next week we will go to another part of the park. After lifeguard and water polo training we used to go for a drink in the park. Think it was the Park Hotel?. I used to have to keep them under control but we were banned after they decided to go for a late night paddle in the stream. J;ust got back from the Cat and feal absolutely full. We are going to the Beggars Bush next week after a walk in the park with the dog. Mind you it should be the other way round. Bye. Still can't find that thread but will post it on hear. This is a photo of our regular visitor to our garden. He is in the tree at the back of Mrs Champions garden. He most possibly flew from Sutton Park which is only 5 mins away by car away. Jean.

Baron don't worry we all have those.....I do it all the time. I used to love to ride my bike from the café in your second picture.......(sorry Jean I hated the name Bobby Browns) to the beach area. This was quite a task when it had been raining so I often ended up sideways in one of the streams. We would then ride up the hill home as I could get home easily from the 'Crown gate' as we called it. I used to carry a pass as a Sutton resident so we wouldn't be charged. I had to show my pass many times to the parkie. My dad has a sticker on his car for the park it was like a badge of honor......we used to laugh at him. It was a real treat for me when I visited my Aunt who lived off Monmouth Drive in those days we could drive straight through the park from Four Oaks gate to the Town Gate. I loved this trip!

Jean I hope you don't have a pond with fish in your garden. The herons round here are a real menace!

Wendy we have 4. [ponds] The two large are netted because once a few years ago our visitor ate and killed some of Pete's favourite fish. The top two are kept for newts and frogs. We took the lads to the stream by Banners gate end by the golf course and caught stickle backs and put them in our pool. They bred like crazy but a chemical we think got into the pool and killed a lot of our fish including them. We think it was someone spraying weed killer but I am going back 30 or od years. Monmouth drive eh lovely houses arn't they. The cheeky heron comes right to the bottom of our garden thats is if he can get past the gulls crow and magpies. Just after the photo he was attacked by loads of birds but Pete's battery was naff again. Never mind. Jean.

Baron that is such a sad picture. Going to 'Keepers' was the highlight of my summer holidays off school.

Mum, my sister and me, picnicking in Sutton Park 1938. Little did we know about the events soon to unfold. The park was great then and still is - we are lucky to have it.

Lovely photo's Baron. I have so many happy memories of being in the Park especially in the snow!

Great photo's Baron wish him indoors would get the car out as I would love to take Brad. He loves the snow. Bye. Jean.

Hi Baron:

Sutton Park is lovely anytime, in the snow it's magical. Thanks for posting
the photos.

Even on a great day like to day someone has to leave litter in the Park, such is the way of thing in this day & age.(SUCH A GREAT PITY)

Went to the park three times last week through three different gates. We went a walk through to Blackroot pool the one day and Pete thought there was a club house there years ago. Does anyone have the answer please. Jean.
