Steam Locos

Hi Bernard and a Happy New Year to you.
You are doing a grand job with these paintings. I must ask my brother if he has still got his steam photos. He had hundreds at one time.

Hi Alf, I have most of "Great Railway series on DVD, they sell them on Burton Market £1 a DVD I must have two dozen, try again on downsize, Dont tell anyone I think I may have cracked it Bernard

Every picture tells a story even on the Barge my Uncle worked for Fellows Morton & Clayton Bernie:)

Lovely paintings Bernard now not being to up to date on this I presume the Welsh one maybe the train on the Great Orme Llandudno. I am sure I will be corrected if it's wrong.

.... or could it be the Snowdon Mountain Railway?

You're right there Froth, Boxing Day 1962 I returned to Brum from Bath via a change at Mangotsfield and it snowed like the clappers but we still made it up the Lickey Bank, arriving in New Street just 5 minutes late. The problem then was the bus ride to Billesley. No wrong kind of snow and leaves on the line etc with steam. During that same winter all new fangled diesel units were replaced by Prairie tanks with a couple of carraiges on Bristol suburban services. Says it all really.

I make no excuse for showing this again

Alf, Have just been reading about the "Great Railway Journeys", the one tomorrow on BBC2 is a new series
with Michael Portillo who is finding out how the Railways transformed travel. It is a twenty part series and
continues daily, one to watch or record! , glad you enjoyed my railway collection, the ones I got from
Burton are part of a 50 dvd collection, it wouldnt be possible to make these again now, theyve most likely
gone for scrap, keep warm cheers Bernard

Yes I'll be watching this evening Bernie, Michael Portillo did one of the Great Raiways of The World Series when he visited his Fathers family in Spain. I saw the repeat just before Christmas on BBC2 don't know if they are still on BBCiplayer, just had a look there is a couple:)

Had to get back to Birmingham from Bournemouth on that day left my Honda and managed to get a seat on the " Belle " to Waterloo, Taxi to Paddington too late ! Taxi to Euston batteries flat on the coach lights only when on the move, Engine ( Type 45 ) failed at Rugby arrived New Street three in the morning home via the all night bus service still running in the snow. In to bed at three up for work at Spring Road ( Lucas ) at seven. Wot you do for love !!.

Hi Alf, watched the "Great Railway " prog on BBC2, it reminded me a bit of that series "Down Your Way, remember that?, He strikes me as a bit of a snob, I can still see his face that night he lost his seat!
Looking forward to the rest cheers Bernard

I was up at the National Rail Museum in York a couple of weeks ago...Here's The Duchess of Hamilton in her streamlined coat.

Does anyone know whether she's in working order? And "City of Birmingham", could she be made to make steam again at an acceptable price? Or would radical and extremely expensive rebuilding have to take place in both cases? db84124

The streamlining was carried out at Tysley works, 6229 has been there for about 4 years having this work done. All the work was cosmetic allowing it to go on display at the NRM at York.
It's doubtful if City of Birmingham or Duchess of Hamilton will ever return to steam as there are 2 other Coronation Class locomotives already preserved in working order.
The red metal object in the front of the photo is the streamlining in the fitting shop prior to fitting, 6229 was parked in the opposite corner covered over with tarpaulin.

Hi

Everything is possible to re-build the City of Birmingham to Steam.
From what I understand in its present Museum condition the answer is no.
Clearly its best place would be if tysely could carry out some intial work
on what needs doing then some sought of fund raising.
We are into big bucks.
