Soho Hill

Another fire in Soho Hill!

oh no..these are the buildings i feared for especially after the watch company next door went up in flames the other week ...they are very old buildings... very upset about this... here are some pics of them in better days..so when these are demolished as they surely will be along with dennisons watch co (now called bill house) and the other old buildings in this st view that makes a massive piece of land to build on..how convenient

Bet the planning application to build on the site is already with the Planning Dept - happening far too frequently these days
yes bri and when they demolish bill house next door there is going to a massive area to build on....this was the plan for the area many years ago but it was shelved

Hi Judy, I am pretty sure Cheffins was between St. Michaels Road and Soho Avenue, but there again it could have been between Soho Avenue and Park Avenue, I think I have said before I went to HKPS. After moving to Sutton Coldfield we still went to Cheffins for some time until I found a dentists in Aldridge, where I worked, and I still go there, a few teeth less!
I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you remember the full name of the dentist there? What is your recollection of them?

photo of the congregational chapel on soho hill..think it was at number 100...i was reading a book the other day about our lost buildings and in it it said that joseph lucas bought the church and ground in 1941..i just wondered that if this is true what did joseph lucas use the church for..i know this was during the war years and not everything was reported in the papers but if someone could check the papers just in case i would be grateful...thanks

thanks viv that has solved it as it did not say in the book just why joseph lucas had acquired the church...seems it was put to very good use which is nothing less than i would expect from the lucas company who i know looked after their workers very well over the years

yes i know bri...nice that they kept a little bit of the church but keeping all of it would have been nicer :(i am now wondering when it was demolished as back in the day i must have walked past it a few times

lyn

Must have past it a few times myself - cannot place the wall and steps even! Mind you, memory is not what it once was........
as youngsters i dont think we took much notice of buildings i know i didnt...i must have walked past st silas mission church in nursery road hundreds of times going back and forth to lozells girls school but for the life i me i cant recall it

I am confused - where does St Silas Mission fit in to the picture?

I don't know the area but have done some digging via planning sites and directories..

The articles refer to a Congregational Church which was at Soho Hill (100)
But ... according to a google search St Silas Church was somewhere else .

St Silas Mission Hall was another property.

Perhaps someone (Lyn) can enlighten me.

For info, as we know the chapel was sold, this was in 1941. The, quite possibly, small congregation continued by moving to a converted house at Hamstead Hill Handsworth.
