Small heath

Must have made his money off pigeon fanciers and those hard dog biscuits he used to sell...Just down the Cov on the opposite side there was a Foster Brothers, where they used send the cash through a tube and on the same side as Turners, past Woolies there was McGauley's toy shop, don't suppose you have any photos do you?

I remember em both shops well, Fos Bros for school clothes, McGauleys for airfix models and bike bits, and a manager who looked like the bloke who used to do tomorrows world. There was a tobacco shop next door that used to sell Joysticks, sort of a 10" long park drive.

I got literally dozens of pics of small heath, on a seperate hard drive, I'll have a look when i get time, I cant remember one of either though.

and just past magualeys was bywaters opposite the horse trough I had an after school and saturday job there. Anyone got any pics of Herbert rd and Oakley rd school please.

Only Bywaters I remember was the abatoir in Greenway St. I thought it was for the pork pie factory, didnt realise they had a shop as well.

There was a Butchers opposite side to McGauleys though.

So pleased this thread has started.Does anyone have any photos or info on Coachsmiths Arms,Watery Lane please? Am just going on the link above this post to have a look.

Wrexham was opposite woolies, Bowling Green Rd at side of that, other entrance to the same factory I expect.

I can remember watching Woolies burn down when I was very small ......any idea what year that was ?

I stand corrected your right I think I was about 9 cos the houses top of our yard backed onto and were evacuated to it so it must have been 54-55 some of the kids were given stuff that was rescued. Do you remember the house on the same road as oakley rd school being burnt down and whole family died?

Dont remeber Oakley Rd, sorry.......I lved the other side of Cov & that was like a foriegn country to me.

I reckoned more like 58 / 59. All I got was a plank to make a trolley with from the builders.

BTW, I think the Wrexham might have been called the Greenway at some point, I do know its had a few name changes. But if thats the case....what was the Greenway called at trhe time ?

Regarding Bolton Rd, my Great Grandparents Harry and Kate Cleaver were living at 223 in 1896.Would anyone have photo of this ?

Mah, Go to search, type in Bolton Road, Bordesley, you might find some info there. In the 50's I used to call in to my mates on the way to school, he lived at 224 Bolton Road which must have been more or less opposite 223. From memory your number must have been close to The Ex Serviceman's Club.

What a fabulous link!! I love the photo of Butlers in Grange Road. I can see myself walking down the road towards Baker Street & "The Nelson". I used to go to boxing classes at Butlers. Great stuff!

Photograph number 1 of an old steam train.
Picture taken from Bolton Road...alas..the old houses were gone here then.
Amazing really..the grass shown here were back gardens to the homes here at one time.
Most of my shots were 1970..so I will date this 1970's.
The roof tops seen to the right of the shot belong to Mount Pleasant whichimg141.jpg was simply separated by this line.

Photograph number 2.
This is a picture of my brother Alan age 16-17.
The shot was taken outside our home in Mount Pleasant Small Heath.
Bolton Road homes can be seen in the background.
Dated 1960's.alan age 17 outside mount pleasant.jpg

Hi Redken,

The picture of the locomotive looks much older than the 1970s.
It is a Jubilee class loco, and still has its pre grouping 4 digit
number. Is the picture therefore earlier than 1948?
Or is this a much later picture of a restored loco, maybe from Tyseley?

Kind regards

Dave

That look like a resorted Loco to me, it's far too clean; LMS was gone by 1947.

I understand that these houses were built around 1948, I can remember they had metal door and window frames as a result of the timber shortage after the war.

Hi Beamish,

Wiki says that Kolhapur was painted in LMS livery in the 1980's, and
repainted in BR green in 1995. I guess that the picture must therefore
fall into this time frame. I really must visit the Tyseley museum, - I've
never been there.

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Dave.
Yes you are right about the loco. The shot was taken in the 70's after the Bolton Road homes were torn down...just chance to have snapped a shot of it at that time.

Not sure if this photo was removed at some time. Flats/Maisonettes on the Coventry Road. Looking toward the Kingston Cinema and taken just above the junction with Bordesley Park Road.

I remember this shot.
It's a cracking picture.
Does anyone recall the car wash that was tucked in the corner behind the top maisoette on the Kingston car park?

I think that it was not Coventry road and that it was probably after 1973. Looking for R.J.Case in Kellys, I could only find one entry, in 1973 (Kellys ended in 1973) at 198 spring road, Tyrsely of R.J.Case, fruiterers. Could only find Barry Slaney in 1972, then at 85 Newhall St. He is not listed in 1973. However in 1973, and for several years before, no 200 Spring road, next door to 198, was Peter(Birmingham) Ltd, turf accountants. Of course the evidenc eis nor certain, but I think the most likely possibility is that Slaney took over Peter after 1973
