School Dinners

I don't recall those van but I do recall that some schools cooked diners for other schools without kitchens. They would pack the freshly cooked food each day into large square aluminium insulated containers. Court Farm School, Short Heath, Erdington cooked for other schools.

Does anyone remember one of these ? A Morrison Electrocar for delivering school meals. I expect they delivered to schools where there were no cooking facilities on site.

Registered apparently in 1944 and as a fuel shortage during WW2 these vehicles were ideal and suited the short drop-off work that they undertook.

I look at that registration number and recall that our dad's ERF lorry was FOP 979.

FOP332 - FOP 480 were BCT double deck buses registered between 1942 and 1946. All were called utility buses, style and design mandated by the Ministry of War Transport. Spartan by BCT the usual standard but as they said at the time - well there was a war on!

All I remember is that they had wooden slatted seats that were most uncomfortable

Originally some early deliveries had statted wooden seats, I believe on the top deck only, but they were replaced as soon as possible. I get the impression that replacement seating came from withdrawn buses where suitable.

However we are now miles off topic so I suggest we revert to scholastic memories.

What was the desert we called frog spawn? tapioca maybe with a dollop of jam we called the frog.

Wish I could have school dinners now....brilliant proper food........cooked in the school kitchens (Mom worked in the kitchens at juniors LOL).
When at Secondary school it was a new thing to stay on into the 5th year ...1968....and I pulled out of having the dinners and took bread/crisps BUT as there was only a few 5th formers they sat outside the dining area and were not counted so I used to join in on 2nd sittings and have loads as most kids didnt like them and passed them to me...ha ha.....no one said a thing - staff or kids. Best time of my life.
